Barker\nUnited States Radium Corporation\n535 Pearl Street\nNew York City, New York\nJUL 15 1931\nMy dear Barker:\nI am glad that you called my attention to the\nquestion of reprints of the paper by Failla and myself which\nis to appear in the August issue of The Journal of Roentgen-\nology. I assume that Failla has read the proof and we had an\nunderstanding that the man who read the proof was to make the\norder for reprints. As the matter now stands Failla wants\n400 reprints and I have my order in for 100. If you would\nlike to have any considerable number, please advise and I shall\nincrease this order. I shall probably not have occasion to use\nmore than 50 of these reprints, but our mailing list is gradual-\nly increasing and that is the reason I put the number up to 100.\nMy stock of the first paper of this series, by\nSchlundt, Barker and Flinn, is nearly exhausted. If you have\nany extra copies on hand, I would appreciate it if you would\nsend me three or four. I may have to call on Dr. Flinn for a\nfew extra copies for I understand that he ordered quite a number.\nI have sent you a copy of the paper by McGavock, Miss Brown and\nmyself on \"The Dangers in Handling Radioactive Substances\".\nI am pleased to hear that progress is being made\non securing the patent on the application of luminous paint. I\nsent you several samples of phosphorescent zinc sulfide sometime\nago. I think that they represent about the best that we have\nproduced up to this time. I hope that you will find time to make\na few measurements on these for absolute luminosity when activated\nby known quantities of radium.\nProbably you have heard that Dr. Miner was taken\nill on his vacation trip. He had to go to a hospital at Kingston,\nNew York. Then he was able to travel and he has been in the\nCooper Hospital, which I suppose is in Camden or Philadelphia,\nfor fully four weeks now. Just what his trouble is he has not\nrevealed, but it is evidently of a serious nature. He is, how-\never, hopeful; but does not have any idea when he will be able to\nleave the hospital.\nWhen we heard of Mrs. LaPorte's death I wrote to\nDr. Martland requesting that he send me a few samples of the\nskeleton in case an autopsy had been made; but I have not heard\nfrom him in answer to this letter, 80 I assume that we shall not\nbe able to settle the question of whether or not Mrs. LaPorte was\nactually radioactive.\nUNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI\nCOLUMBIA\nDEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY\n2-Mr. Barker-7-13-31\nWhen are you planning to take your vacation,\nand are you thinking of going to Colorado for a little in-\nspiration and rest?\nWith very good wishes, I remain,\nSincerely yours,\nHerman Schlundt\nHerman Schlundt.\nhs.as"
