Letters Sent to James Ewing, December 7, 1931

December 7th, 1331. Dr. Janes Ewing, Cornel University ledical College, lst Ave. and 28th St., N.Y.C. Dear Dr. Ewing: lie are herewith enclosing two bills from Dr. Peabody, for x-ray examinations of Mrs. barice and Mrs. Hussman. Ne shall withhold payment of these bills until we have your approval. In a 'phone conversation with Dr. Craver, of even date, he indicated that he presumed that these examinations were made at the request of Dr. Humphries, for he had no definite knowledge as to their having been made. This again brings up the subject of whether or not these x-ray pictures were made with the proper authorization. In case the girls were under Dr. Humphries care and he requested the plates, we feel that your Committee should have been advised as to what was being done. lie also have a bill before us from L. Bamberger and Co., on account of Mrs. Larice for one eorset at $8.50, one brassiere at $1.50 and alterations 504, making a total of $10.50, which bears your approval. Dr. Craver mentioned that at Mrs. barice's last visit to the Hospital you suggested that she wear a corset to support her back, and we presume that this constitutes the grounds under which she has sent us the bill. We, however, do not feel that the brassiere was a necessary adjunet for the support of her back, but a garment usually worn by the average woman. While the amount involved is not large, still we believe there is a principle involved here which should not be passed by, otherwise it will not be long before these girls will be sending us all sorts of bills for payment. We have probably been very lenient in the past with reference to the payment of certain bills, and if such leniency is continued I an afraid that a point will be reached where we will be paying for many of the ordinary necessities of life rather than expense involved for reasonable medical care.
