Mr. H. H. Barker
United States Radium Corporation
535 Pearl Street
New York City
My dear Barker:
I wish to thank you for your prompt
response to our request for funds to carry on the
radium refining work. The boys are making very
good progress with the sodium hydroxide fusions
and I think we have finally solved the treatment
of this obstreperous material.
Please be advised that Mr. Armstrong
has done everything that he can to arrange for our
visit to Elgin. We have written him that we ex-
pect to be on hand early Monday morning, December
28th. We expect to go by train to Chicago and Mr.
Armstrong will probably accompany us to Elgin.
In case the weather is clear, and
looks steady, we may take the car and go directly
to Elgin without going to Chicago. I shall keep
Mr. Armstrong posted as to our plans.
We have heard from Dr. Flinn; he is
sending us two ionization chambers, one with very
small natural drift and another which is rather
high. I asked him to send the second one for I
have hopes that I may give this chamber a little
treatment and restore it to its normal natural
drift. Our gamma ray instrument has a very small
natural drift, only about .1 the drift that your
instrument has under its best working conditions.
We thus anticipate no difficulties in making the
measurements.
Mr. Armstrong writes that there are
several physicians in Chicago who would like to have
some tests made on some of their patients, and I
hope that we can find time to do this; we shall be
free to give the entire week to the work but it will
be necessary for me to be back here in Columbia on
Sunday, January 3d.
Wishing you 8. Merry Christmas and ex-
tending my good wishes to Mr. Lee, I remain,
Sincerely yours,
Herman Schlundt
