UNIVERSITY OF missouri COLUMBIA DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY May 11th, 1932. Mr. H. H. Barker United States Radium Corporation MAY 13 1932 535 Pearl Street New York City My dear Barker: The report which I sent the Radium Extension Service of the amount of radium which was found in the various patients examined at the Elgin State Hospital is the same one I showed you hurriedly while you were here in Columbia the last time. We, of course, were surprised at the free emanating state of the radium contained in these patients. To follow this matter up I have written to Mr. Armstrong advising him that we are interested in making a follow-up series of determinations on these patients. My object in writing to Armstrong was largely to have him interview Dr. Read who has charge of the hospital and to get his viewpoint about having these patients tested a second time. I would like to do this in order to get a little more informa- tion upon which to base a theory of the high emanating power of the radium contained in these patients. Within the next week I hope to get clear of the meetings of a committee on economies which has been holding sessions ranging from two to five hours a day, almost daily and then I whall try to get before you a more complete report of the Elgin cases showing the dates on which the radium was administered. I also have several other matters affecting the future research program here on radium which I wish to pre- sent to you to secure your cooperation in getting in touch with the proper persons in New York City who have indicated an interest in our experiments on radia- tions from radium and their physiological effects, but I hardly have time today to formulate the matter in detail. Very sincerely yours, Herman Schlundt hs.as Herman Schlundt.
