Barker MAY 18 1932 United States Radium Corporation 535 Pearl Street New York City My dear Barker: Hope to secure cooperation in furthering a proposal Dean Robbins has succeeded in getting before the Josiah Macey Junior Foundation for a grant toward our re- search program here, on Radium and its Biological Applica- tions. Let me give you the present status of the case: Robbins has served as Dean now for about two years. From the outset he has made a determined effort to promote re- search work, and he has left no stone unturned to secure funds from the various private foundations that provide aid for worthy research programs. The response to his ef- forts would have caused many a man of less perseverance and faith to drop the project. As nearly as I can gather from various remarks he has dropped at different times, the several lines of scientific research in progress here have not attained sufficient proportions or importance to make a strong appeal to those who control the allottments. Strong, successful research programs in other institutions seem to make a stronger appeal than the cases presented by the Dean. Recently, however, the Macey Foundation has given him some encouragement. We want to do all we can to put our case be- fore the Foundation in an effective way. We think you can help us by interesting such men as Dr. Ewing and Failla, and perhaps others in New York in supporting our application. The scientific adviser to the Foundation is Dr. Ward J. MacNeal, who can be communi- cated with through the Foundation, 565 Park Avenue. (Flinn and Martland I do not include in the picture). I am hoping that you yourself can establish contact with Dr. MacNeal, which contact can then be extended to include Ewing, Failla, Rentschler, Marden, Redman, and others. We have filed with the Foundation in bound form the publications from this laboratory on radioactivity under the title Twenty-five Years of Research in Radioactivity It is this record of accomplishment and Dean Robbins' visit which have at least made an appeal that is being given serious consideration.
