Dr. liernan Schlundt,
University of Missouri,
Columbai, Mo.
Dear Dr. Schlundt:
Dr. Flinn returned from his trip Abroad lest week, and
I have had a lengthy conversation with him over the 'phone, and feel that
you and probably Dean Robbins will be quite interested in Dr. Flinn's
reaction to the use of radon.
Firat let me Bay that Dr. Flinn seemed to be very pleased
with the trip he had, and that he visited institutions in Germany,
Switzerlend, Czecho-Slovakie and France, and that in all cases he found that
they were using radon as one of their standard types of treatment for
certain conditions. lie was most favorably imp essed by the results which
they were obtaining, and seess to feel that there are undoubtedly certain
conditions which respond to this treatment as administered Abroad.
Their general technique is quite diffe. ent than that
which has been employed in this country, in that they give a daily dosage
of anywhere from 6000 to 10000 Nache Units in a miniman quantity of water
approximatoly 200 cc. They continue this treatment for a period of 6 to 8
weeks, and then stop for 3 to 6 months. If the conditión of the patient.
indicates a repitition of the radon treatment it is again begun for 6 to
8 weeks. They have applied this type of treatnent largely to Arthritis
patients, and it is in this field which they are obtaining the best results.
The thing that seemed to impress Dr. Flinn was the fact
that all institutions which he visited were using this type of treatment,
and in all cases their technique seemed to be the same - such technique
having been apparently developed independently of one another.
I understand that Dr. Flinn is to write an article for the
American Journal of Roentgenology and Radium Therapy, on his visit Abroad,
this article to appear in the near future.
I have also heard a rumor to the effect that there is to
be started in the middle west, a radium emanatorium, where radium will be
employed quite generally in the treatment of certain conditions, and that
Dr. Rollin H. Stevens of Detroit, of whom I spoke to you about, is to be
