- 2 - C. B. Lee 3-24-38 cooperative and ambitious. In regard to salary, he has had such an excellent training and holds a Ph.D. that I believe he is worth $3000 if you were prepared to offer him that. I am sure he would prove his value from the beginning and that he would fit into your organization perfectly. He has no business experience, but I believe has the qualifications which make him suited for it. I assume that he would not be available until the close of the session at the University of Southern California which is about the end of May. If you would need someone immediately to fill in until he were available, I have the following suggestion: Mrs. Keren Gilmore Brattain, one of my former students who had about the same training as Copeland, is married to a physicist employed in the Bell Telephone Laboratories and lives at 270 West 11th Street, New York City. If you needed someone for immediate service, I think she might be avail- able, and I am sure she would be very competent. She also worked with radium emanation and understands electroscopes. I believe she never had any experience with Geiger counters, but I do not know whether you use them or not. She has a Ph.D. degree with a major in Physical Chemistry and a minor in Physics. She is a very business like young woman. I am not communicating with her, but will leave that to you if you wish since she is in New York City. I ascertained by wire yesterday that Copeland would be interested in a position with you, so you can open negotiations with him if you so desire. In case you should not be able to make arrangements with either one, there are some other men that might be available whom I would be glad to discuss with you later. I am terribly sorry to hear about Barker. I suppose there is little doubt about the diagnosis. Please remember me to him if you can do so without disclosing the nature of our correspondence. With best regards, Sincerely yours, S. 2. Lind. S. C. Lind, Dean scl:f P.S. Dr. Charles S. Copeland's address is, Department of Chemistry, University of Southern California, University Park, Los Angeles, Calif.
