Mar. 31,1938. Dr. S.C. Lind, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn. Dear Dr. Lind: I want to thank you for your letter of March 24th con- taining valuable suggestions of technicians to take care of our requirements here. About the same time I wrote you I also contacted the University of Missouri. They in turn gave me the names of four former students who have had considerable experience with radio- activity. One of these young men, C. W. Wallhauson, by name, just left our place yesterday afternoon after having spent two days look- ing over the equipment and familiarizing himself more or less with what would be necessary. We have engaged Mr. Wallhausen and he will report for duty on the 18th of April. Wallhausen worked under Dr. Schlundt and actually refined and crystallized radium for a period of four years. He has done con- siderable amount of tubing and has had quite a bit of experience in making up special radium and mesothorium preparations for scientific study. He is considered one of the best students they have had in a number of years at the University of Missouri and of course has a lot of experience along the line that we desire. He did not complete the work for his Ph.D, being one year short. He was majoring in in- organic chemistry with a minor in physics. It is our opinion that when he is fully acquainted with our various operations, he will fill our position ideally. Wallhausen is very anxious to complete his work for a Ph.D, and in all probability will make arrangements to do so at Columbia, and of course he will have our encouragement and cooperation. Our good friend, Barker, is gradually growing weaker and may not last longer than amonth or two. We are all very much broken up over this unfortunate situation, but he is having the best of care and in the main is reasonably comfortable. If the opportunity arises where I can extend to him your regards, I shall do so, but this may not be pos- sible since he has not been in any way told of his condition and is hope- ful that he will soon be out again. Again thanking you for your interest in our behalf, I am, Cordially yours, CBLEE;dk President
