August 4, ,1938. Dr. S.C.Lind, Univorsity of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn. Dear Dr. Lind: I was glad to receive your lotter of July 28th and to note that you have returnod to the states. Hope your taip abroad was both pitaasant and profitable. Our good friend, Barker, passed avray on May 7th. He was practically unconscious from the time you called me in Now York until his death. of course, this was largely due on account of the excessive drugs used to kreep him in comparative comfort. His passing was without an undue amount of pain. The experience of Dr. Hess with the Hitler regimo is cortainly most unfortunate. I remombor Dr. Hoss vory well. As a matter of fact, ho taught me to malco alpha ray detorminations on carnotite ore previous to my taking charge of our minos in Colorado. I see no place in our organization where we could pos- sibly use Dr. Hess, since our activities have been so groatly cur- tailed. Our only need for a technician is a man femiliar with making up radium preparations and the compounding of luminous material, and I am glad to say that our new acquisition, Mr. Well- hausen, is working out in a very satisfactory manner. Should Dr. lloss come to the states, wo shall be glad to give whatever assistance we can in aiding him to malo a satis- factory connection. In all probability, thore could be found for him a place in some of our scientific institutions where he would fit in ideally. I had hoped to see you on your roturn from abroad, and trust you will not pass us by noxt time you are this way. Cordially yours, CBLee eDK Prosident
