Attention Mr. Lee
1939
Gentlemen:
I met one of your representatives from Los Angeles (I have mislaid
his name) at our Detroit Rotary Club last week and learning his
classification in the California Club I inquired about the cost of
changing over some of my radium to larger denominations. He referred
me to your Mr. C. B. Lee.
What I have in mind is this: I have in the neighborhood of 48 mgs.
in 2 mg. cells. These cells are of platinum iridium, have a wall
thickness of .35 mm, a length of 13.1 mm and a dimeter of 1.29 mm.
The radium contents vary of course with each fell from 1.5 to 1.9 mgs.
I want all this changed over into four 10 mg. cells of platinum iridium
which has a wall thickness of 1/2 mm. The length and diameter would
have to be figured out accordingly. These tubes I want packed full
so that the radium content will not slide around in different parts of
the tube. I desire to use this radium particularly according to the
method of Strandquist (Acta Radiologica P.1. Vol XX, Fasc. 1 #113
2/28/1939 and Vol XX, Fasc 2, # 114, 4/29/1939 P. 186) of Stockholm
Radiumhemet, his plan being based upon the work of Sievert of the same
institution. The method of using this is described in two recent
numbers of Acta Rdaiologica above referred to. I am planning to have
made the glass carriers such as he used which are 4-1/2 mms. in hickness
in all directions, the sides being round and a hole being made in the
center just sufficiently large to carry the 10 mg. needles. These glass
units can then be placed in one or two rows. The distanceof radium to
the skin cannot vary. Thus, the dose can be figured out accurately in
r units with the help of a series of tables which we would have printed.
This makes for much more accurate dosage than anything we have had yet.
I also have 21 mgs. in 3 mg. needles which have a wall thickness of
about 0.15 mm and are platinum iridium. These would be added to the
rest of the radium which would give me two additional needles as I have
described and a few mgs. left over to which I might add enough radium
to make another 10 mg. needle.
I also have some 10 mg. needles in monel metal which I presume I would
better change over to the platinum inasmuch as I could standardize my
doses better with the 1/2 mm of platinum wall. I also have several 5 mg
needles in platinum and in monel metal which I might consider changing

if the expense is not too heavy. I have also some 6.6 and 13.2 mg
which are in platinum cells but which I find are not filled tightly
so that the radium slides around inside as much as 3 or 4 mms. These
I might leave as they are except to open them up and pack them tightly
so that I can figure my dosage more accurately.
Can you give me some idea as to what would be the cost of doing some
of this work which 1 presume you are equipped to do.
Thanking you, I am
Yours very truly
