FORVICTORY FEDERAL SECURITY AGENCY BUY UNITED STATES WAR U.S. PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE BONDS AND STAMPS WASHINGTON 14 IN REPLYING (BETHESDA STATION) ADDRESS THE SURGEON GENERAL Feb. 16, 1946 U.S. PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE FEB 19 1946 Mr. C. W. Wallhausen, Chief Chemist U. S. Radium Corporation 535 Pearl Street New York 7, N. Y. Dear Mr. Wallhausen: I appreciate very much your informative letter of Jan- uary 22. Naturally, I am interested in your remarks regard- ing the progress of the experiments you are making with Dr. Hess. The attempts to measure the radium in the body by direct gamma ray measurements are of particular interest be- cause I know from experience how extremely difficult it is to be absolutely certain of the absence of all external con- tamination. Also, the interpretation of such results are is very difficult because of lack of knowledge of the distri- bution of radium in the body and internal absorption of the gamma rays. I will, of course, be interested in hearing of your progress. I am accepting also your kind offer to send me a copy of the results of the measurements of Drs. Hess and Flinn. I should very much like to study these results and compare them with some of my own. I'll write you further about the radium as soon as we decide about our needs. Sincerely yours, ThankE Holcker Frank E. Hoecker Assoc. Prof. Physics & Astronomy Consultant, U.S. Public Health Serv. feh/ks
