the smission by the parent element and the succeeding
elementa of alpha, beta and ganma particles or rays.
The alpha and beta rays are tiny particles of matter
which nay be weighed and nessured, while the gamma ray,
having no nass, is pure ray as distinguished from A
particle of matter. The alpha ray has only a slight
penetzating quality, for it will not even pasa through
a cigarette paper. A beta ray has greater penetrating
quality, as it will pasa through a thin wall of glass.
The ray has a very strong penetrating quality,
and requires a considerable thickness of lead to stop
it.
of the 96 known basic elements forming natter,
radiuma 1s number 68. Every element is composed of atons,
and, since redioactive characteristies involve atomie
changes and atomie changes produce different elements,
the atoale structure is important in understending the
emergence of new elenents in a disintegration series.
The atom consists besically of a compact cen-
tral portion known as the nucleus, composed of positive-
ly charged electrified particles, called protons, and
noutral particles consisting of closely bound positive
and negative particles, called neutrons. Revoling about
this centrol nucleus, and not unlike our own aolar syatem,
