OCR Page 1 of 21 was glad to receive your lotter of July 28th and
to note that you have returiod to the states. Hope your trip
abroad was both proasent and profitable.
Our good friend, Barker, passed away on May 7the He
was practically unconscious from the time you callod me in Now
York until his death. of course, this was largely due on account
of the excessive drugs used to koop him in comparative comfort.
His passing was without an undue amount of pain.
The experience of Dr. Hess with the Hitler rogimo is
certainly most unfortunate. I romember Dr. Hoss vory well. As
a matter of fact, ho taught me to malos alpha ray detorminations
on oarnotite ore previous to my taking charge of our minos in
Colorado. I soe no place in our organization where we could pos-
sibly use Dr. Hess, since our activities have been so groatly our-
tailed. Our only need for a technician is a man familiar with
making up radium proparations and the compounding of luminous
material, and I am glad to say that our new acquisition, Mr. Well-
hausen, is working out in a very satisfactory menner.
Should Dr. lloss come to the states, wo shall be glad to
givo whatever assistance we con in aiding him to malo a satis-
factory connection. In all probability, thore could be found for
him a place in some of our scientific institutions where he would
fit in ideally.
I had hoped to see you on your roturn from abroad, and
trust you will not pass us by noxt time you are this way.
Cordially yours,
