Caso V. - Miss Grace Fryer, employed four and one holf years ago, had a left lowor molar extratted one year ago. The wound apparently healed normally. Six months later a sinus appeared at the eite of the extracted molar and Grained pue profusely for some months. X-raya taken at the Reconstruction Hospital, New York City, on March 3,1924, showed evidence of a chronic infectious process in the jaw in the region of the extracted tooth. This patient left the hospital fivo days Inter unrelieved and with a diamosis of chronic osteomyolitis o & the jaw, possibly due to phosphoros poisoning. She is, however, now reported by Dr. NeCaffrey, Dr. Harry Dunning's assistanet, to have recovered saticfactorily. (Dr. Herry Dunning 33 Tast 68th Street, Now York City.) In addition to these five cases, we have the opinion of Dr. w.F. Tarry of Newark, a competent dental in remad to the condition of the jarro of sevoral other prosent or former employees of the Radium Cor oration. In De-Berry's opinion, Hães Kathorine Schaub, employed from March 22,1917, to Merch 19,1920, Nães J. M. Smith, employed for geven years, Mies 0. Smith, and Hies Vern Eldridge all show jaw chanzes similar to those shown by Rudolph when he firet saw her. Dr. Parry refuges to pull a tooth from any one of these girls, bolieving that if he does so an intractable necrosie, which he compares to that of phosphorus polsoning, will be initiated. Compotent dentnl surgoons in noston, who have examined the filma upon which Dr. Barry bases hia opinion, with him, and state that, in their opinions Mies Schaub is the only patient who shows definite hone changos. One of your employees reports that a Madlingor (formerly lise Nettie tozier), employed by the Radium Corporation for five years and up to three months ago, hnd a tooth extracted two months ago and that pus 1s still draining from the cavity. Horo, then, is a series of five enses of necrosis of the jaw - necrosis not al all like the ordinary infections of the jam which do occasionally follow the extraction of a tooth. Inatend of a localized process which hoals either of itself or after the establiement of drainazo, we havo a chronic progressive rotting away of the bone, which, in the opinion of Dr. Barry and of dental surgonns whom we have consulted in Boston, is essentially different from an ordinary infec- tious process or from tuberculoeis of the bone, but resembles practically exactly the necrosis of the jaw remulting from phosphorus poisoning. In our opinion, 50 groat an incidance enong your employees of this unusual disease procese in the jam cannot be coincidence but must be dependent upon some typo of bone damage occasioned by the employment. ANALYSIS OF POSSIBLE TOXIO AGRNTS. In view of the excellent goneral hyrãone of the work as conducted in your factory, it seems at once advisable to atudy the special ingredients used in the luminous material. The base, "Undark", of the luminous paint contains no phosphorus but consiste of a luminous zine sulphide containing minute traces of coppar combined with small amounts of rndinm bromide, probably changed later into Tadium sulphate. The amount of radium bromide per gram of dry luminoum powder bese averages, according to Mr. Viedt, 0.007 mg. intimately mixed with the sine sulphide. The vehicle is varied and the peint is applied with fine brushes. As wo learned from the dial painters that until six months amp it was
