TEST FOR RADIOACTIVITY
ON MRS. HOARE
by
Herman Schlundt
- - -
The test was conducted in the laboratory of
Frederick Flinn, College of Physicians and Surgeons,
Columbia University, New York on Tuesday, June 17, 1930.
The instruments used in these tests were the same
ones that have served in previous tests for radioactivity of
persons suspected of "Radium poisoning". Both the gamma ray
test and the expired air test were made.
The results of the measurements indicate that the
case of Mrs. Heare is to be regarded as a border line case.
The results fix a suspicion that Mrs. Hoare is slightly
radioactive. The total quantity of radium which our tests
indicate does not exceed two mierograms (2 6). Different
series measurements given at range of one to two micrograms
for the total amount of radium. Considering the somewhat
adverse weather conditions which prevailed on the day
these measurements had to be made, the figures given for the
amount of radium leave an element of doubt in my mind con-
cerning the positive character of the results. A critical
examination of the data obtained will doubtless point to the
conclusion that the values given for the radioactivity of
Mrs. Hoare, clearly lie within the limits of error of the
instruments used for the measurements. If weather conditions
had been more favorable for electroscopic measurements,
perhaps a more definite result might have been obtained,
but under the conditions of the test the experimental data.
leaves an element of uncertainty in the case of Mrs. Hoare
of which I can not divest myself.
Respectfully submitted,
Herman Schlundt
