BOSNIA -
ABC's Peter Jennings reported that former
President Carter will visit Sarajevo after being invited by
Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic. CBS's Connie Chung
reported that Carter had consulted with the President about the
mission but added that, "he will be acting as a private citizen."
Chung said Carter is trying to avoid stepping on the President's
toes, as critics believe he has done earlier this year. (CBS)
The Washington Post's Daniel Williams and Ann Devroy
reported that, "With President Clinton's blessing, former
president Jimmy Carter drove into Bosnia diplomacy this week and
yesterday received a pledge from Bosnian Serb separatists to
begin a cease-
fire around Sarajevo within 24 hours and let United
Nations humanitarian convoys operate freely." The New York
Times' Douglas Jehl reported that, "Former President Jimmy Carter
said Wednesday that he had held talks with Bosnian Serb
emissaries and might travel to the region soon as a private
mediator to promote a Bosnian peace settlement." USA Today's
Steve Komarow reported that, "With Western powers threatening
tougher action against him, Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic
is offering a cease-
fire, enlisting former president Jimmy Carter
to mediate."
The Los Angeles Times' Norman Kempster reported that
Carter's evenhanded approach "contrasts with the official policy
of the Clinton administration, which regard's Bosnia's Serbs as
the primary aggressors in the conflict and considers the
government and its supporters to be the victims."
In a statement, the White House "said the President was
somewhat skeptical that the Bosnian Serb leader would make good
on his promises." (NYT)
