A New Perception of Earth
The Transformation Scenario
world maps are symbolic lools which help to shape our perception of Earth
Every world map projection must make certain compromises as Information is
transferred from o spherical globe to o flot surface. With this in mind, as early as
1927 Buckminster Fuler, on educator, engineer, architect, author, carlographer
and futurist. set out to develop the world's most accurate 2-dimensional world
map. He wanted to provide a view of the whole Earth at once which have
the ability to reveal major trends in world affairs and show the shortest ok routes
between land masses. Fuller predicted even then that global travel would shift
from me seo to the sky and anticipated the emergence of what he formed a
One-Town Alr-Ocean World."
Designing for Accuracy
Using the some mathematical principles on which his world famous geodesic
domes were to be based, Fuller carefully designed a way to display the world of
of once. with the least amount of visual distortion. Throughout the ne « 26 years
he refined his world projection through many successive versions In order to reach
me Highest level of accuracy. In 1954 Fuller called his final Icosahedral projection
me "Dymaxion Alr-Ocean World." (The term "Dymaxion" was colned In the 1930's
from Fuller's most commonly used words: dynamic, maximum and lunsion.) In
1980. on even more elegant and occurate Dymaxion Mop was developed by
Fuller and his associates. Robert Grip and Christopher Kitrick. by using computer
generated algorithms for latitude and longltude Information. Now O txand new
saltion of Fuller's remarkable mop. the Fuler Projection Dymoodon Globe has
been designed and updated by the Buckminster Fuller Institute using the
distingulshed cartographic services of R.R. Donnelley & Sons.
A Tool for Global Responsibility
With our increasing global awareness, o world map is needed which unables us
to highlight the relationships among 04 nations and cultures of the world rather
than one which emphasizes artificial boundaries between them. Environmental
concerns are becoming o centrol focus of our International agenda. Therefore,
we must leom 10 see what unites us rather than what separates us, and to chort
global resources, population and distribution patterns which charoc the
complex trends and critical needs of the world today. In Fuller's own words, "the
Dymaxion Map reveals o One-World Island In a One-World Ocean' which helps
us to view the world as one Interdependent system of relationships. Each while
dol represents approximately 1 percent of humanity (approximately 54.2 million
people as of mld-1992). Each while dot is located near the highest population
density of the 54.2 million people It represents.
Instructions for Assembly:
1. Punch out map along die-cut lines.
2. Place map, face down, on any flat surface. Fold and crease all scored lines
and tabs. Smooth, straight folc:s are Important. Now you are ready to begin
assembling your Dymaxion™ Globe.
3. Insert tab A into slot A. Continue with B to B, c to C and so on through L to L.
There should be no overlaps or gaps in the edges of the map.
4. Assemble the base by Inserting tab M into slot M.

FULLER'S PROJECTION METHOD
Fuller superimposed a spherical bosahedron grid onto the Earth's sphere. Each of the grid's edges are ares of "Great Clrcles' which show the shortest routes
between two points on a sphere's surface. When the Great Circle ares are unfolded, the arc-edges of the spherical Icasahedron become the straight edges
of the regular Icosahedron and the twenty spherical triangles become twenty plane triangles. Since the arc-edges are unfolded, thet lengths remain
undistarted. Minute distortion in the middle of each triangle is distributed evenly throughout the mop. The Fuller Projection is not a "shadow" projection as
most maps are because the world is not "projected" onto a regular Icasahedron but rather unfolds h/o an Icosahedron Thus, Fuller preferred to call his mop
a "transformation" During this transformation the line from the sphere's center through the sphere's surface and out to the zenlth point is kept of a constant
90 degree angle with respect to the map's surface. Fuller referred to this as a "constant zenlth projection."

Commonly asked questions about the Fuller Projection:
What is meant by "no visual distortion?"
When transferring geographic data from the globe onto O flot plane, distortions will always occur In either shape. size, area. distance or direction. On projections
such as the Mercator mop, the further north or south of the equator one goes, the more extreme the distortion becomes. When comparing the Mercator mop to
o globe, It Is easy for everyone to see that Greenland, for example, is much larger on the flot Mercator mop than it is on the globe. However, when visually comparing

the land masses on Fuler's mop when It is compared to a globe. Minute area and shape distortions can be detected mathematically and are equally distributed
throughout the map. Visually. however, these distortions are negigible.
Why an Icosahedron?
A polyhedron is a many-sided 3-dimensional object. An icosahedron Is a polyhedron with 20 equilateral triangular faces. Of the five Platonic polyhedra (all of which
have equal foces h size and shape). the Icosohedron most closely approximates sphere. Fuller found that the best way to loy various polyhedra flat while keeping
Oll the land masses unbroken was to use the Icosahedron. With only two exceptions, all the breaks needed to loy the Icosohedron flot occur completely within the
oceans, and. therefore, keeps the division of land masses to a minimum. With minor adjustments to two triangular faces. Fuller's Dymaxion Alr-Ocean World Map
provides us with a flat view of all the Earth's land masses as unbroken Islands In a single world ocean.
Why are the oceans broken up?

allowed the mop to be dynamic. By rearranging the triangles, with the South Pole of the center of the mop, navigation routes by sea become readly apparent,
just as als routes across the North Pole are obvious in the original configuration. Fuller explored more than 25 different useful configurations of the Dymoxion Alr-
Ocean World Mop. Each configuration Introduces breaks in different places and allows different aspects of the world to be emphasized.
Why are the mean low temperature zones shown?
The Fuller Projection defines our world not In terms of political boundarles or physical features but by temperature zone. Buckminster Fuller was Interested In the history
of human migration and the geographical areas of technological Innovation as It related to temperature. Looking at the yellow bond closest to the North Pole we
line find that the mean low temperature ranges from 23° to 41° Fahrenhelt. Fuller found that throughout history, humans migrated east to west along the 32° freezing
and that the majortty of the dominant centers of modem civilization can be found to fie somewhere within this optimum temperature bond. He felt mot social
patterns. human preoccupations and economic customs are determined by how cold II gets. not by how hot. Buckminster Fuller then realized that: (1) the colder
anarea gets the larger the fluctuation in temperature is to be found, and (2) the more a geographical area's tem exature varies. the more technologically Inventive
must humans living there become In order to survive. (For example, they must learn to buld boots to class a lok In summer, os well as design sleds to cross the Ice
in winter.)

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FULLER PROJECTION:
What is meant by "no visual distortion?"
When transferring geographic data from the globe onto a flat plane, distortions will always occur in either shape, size, area, distance or direction. On projections such as the Mercator Tap,
the further north or south of the equator one goes, the more extreme the distortion becomes. When comparing the Mercator map to 0 globe, it is easy for everyone to see that Greenland,

However, there are no visible shape discrepancies in any of the land masses on Fuller's map when it is compared to a globe. Minute area and shape distortions can be detected

where to introduce these breaks? One way of doing this is to introduce the breaks in the oceans as much as possible. This provides 0 world view in which the land masses are unbroken.

FULLER 'S PROJECTION METHOD
Fuller superimposed a spherical icosahedron grid onto the Earth's sphere.
Each of the grid's edges are arcs of "Great Circles" which show the
shortest routes between two points on 0 sphere's surface. When the Great
Circle arcs are unfolded, the arc-edges of the spherical icosahedron become
the straight edges of the regular icosahedron and the twenty spherical
triangles become twenty plane triangles. Since the arc-edges are unfolded,
their lengths remain undistorted. Minute distortion in the middle of each
triangle is distributed evenly throughout the map. The Fuller Projection is
not a "shadow" projection as most maps are because the world is not
"projected" onto a regular icosahedron but rather unfolds into on
icosahedron. Thus, Fuller preferred to call his map a "transformation."
During this transformation, the line from the sphere's center through the
sphere's surface and out to the zenith point is kept at a constant 90
degree angle with respect to the map's surface. Fuller referred to this as 0
"constant zenith projection."
