Dear John:
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the tragic death
of John F. Kennedy, Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister, Lauren
Bessette. Hillary and I were deeply saddened to learn of the
loss of these three vibrant and accomplished young people. Their
promising lives were much too brief, and we are keeping their
families in our thoughts and prayers.
John Kennedy, Jr., held a special place in the hearts of
people across America and around the world. While many of us
remember John from the time he was a young boy, he will live on
in all of our hearts as the good and decent man he had become.
Hillary and I join all Americans in mourning the loss of John and
Carolyn Kennedy and Lauren Bessette, and our hearts go out to
their families and many friends.
Thank you again for taking the time to write.
Sincerely,
Bin Clinten

Kennedy condolence: slr/draft/kennedy.rms
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the tragic death of John F.
Kennedy, Jr. Hillary and I were very fond of him, and we are deeply
shocked and saddened by the loss of his life and of his wife, Carolyn,
and her sister, Lauren Bessette. They were young people with goods
hearts, and I will always be grateful for their kindnesses to Hillary
and Chelsea and me.
For more than 40 years, the Kennedy family has inspired Americans to
public service, strengthened our faith in the future, and moved our
nation forward. They have been a symbol of hope for America and for
the world. In recent years, John Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn have
captured our imagination and won our affection.
The son of a great President, John, Jr. touched the hearts of people
of all nations with his moving salute to his father's grave.
Throughout the years, we have watched him grow into a fine young man,
a talented journalist, and a human being with wonderful potential.
Though we will mourn the loss of this promising young life, I know
that he will continue to hold a special place in all our hearts.
Thank you again for taking the time to write.

July 18, 1999
STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT
ON JOHN F. KENNEDY, JR.,
CAROLYN KENNEDY,
AND LAUREN BESSETTE
The South Grounds
4:13 P.M. EDT
THE PRESIDENT: As the search continues, I want to express our
family's support, and offer our prayers and those of all Americans
for John Kennedy, Jr.; his wife, Carolyn; her sister, Lauren; and to
their fine families.
I also want to thank the Coast Guard and all those who have
worked so hard in this endeavor.
For more than 40 years now, the Kennedy family has inspired
Americans to public service, strengthened our faith in the future,
and moved our nation forward. Through it all they have suffered
much, and given more.
In recent years, in particular, John Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn
have captured our imagination and won our affection. I will always
be grateful for their kindnesses to Hillary and Chelsea and me.
At this difficult moment, we hope the families of these
three fine young people will feel the strength of God, the love of
their friends, and the prayers of their fellow citizens.

We need to create a p-letter to handle the incomings in Mail Analysis for JFK, Jr. Use the letter about
Princess Diana as a sample. Please have Maureen Hudson review before you give it to me for edit. I
would like to have your draft by Friday.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the tragic death of Princess Diana. Hillary and I were very
found of her, and, like millions of others around the worllk, we admired her determined work on behalf of
chilfen, victims of lalndmines, and pepople with AIDS, as well as many other worthy causes.
Of course, Princess Diana held a special place int he eharts of Americans, and I was pleased that the
First Lady was able to attend her funeral in London to represent our antion.
Thank you again for taking the time to write.
A couple thoughts - - talk about his work and the family as a symbol to our nation and to the world (so this
can also be used to respond to foreign incomings. I would not say anything about the funeral since that is
now a topic of controversty (the expense). Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Debi
