We had another meeting of the civil rights coordinating council. Here is an update on your issues:
(1) Trafficking: Chuck and Maria wanted to get a status update on the DOJ and INS effort on the
sweatshop initiative. Both Chuck and Maria wanted to get a sense of how big the trafficking
problem is in the US.
(2) EEO Backlog: I briefed them on the status of the EEO Backlog regulation, and will send around a
copy to all of you. They also wanted to see what else we could do in order to reduce the backlog
besides the regulation like get a breakdown by agencies on how big the backlog is and seeing
that agencies have fully staffed their EEO offices. We can work together on this.
(3) National Origin/Language Rights: Out of the 3 next steps in the chart that was sent around,
Chuck and Maria were most interested in (3) which is, ensuring that agencies are complying with
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act as it relates to provisions of services to LEP persons by providing
legal guidance.
