SUBJECT: AMERICAN SHARE OF NON-U.S. WORLD CIGARETTE MARKET
Mr. Reed, attached please find the FDA Foreign Agricultural Service's most recent (1996) figures
on the ratio of U.S. cigarette exports to total world cigarette consumption. United States' companies
exported 243.9 billion cigarettes in 1996 -- about 5% of the ~5.3 trillion cigarettes consumed
worldwide last year. Also attached is a copy of a 1996 publication from the World Health
Organization delving into a number of global smoking trends across nationality, age, gender, and
other gauges.
