Tobacco- Liability

Dear Mr. Bruce Reed:
I am writing to you regarding the Tobacco Bill. I have recently read that the White House is now
supporting immunity for the tobacco industry. I was extremely disappointed to read this. I do not
understand how you can vote to protect an industry that sells a product that is the leading cause of
premature death in our country. On top of that, it has been proven that the tobacco industry targets
young children so they will have future customers: How can we protect an industry that profits from
causing millions of people to become sick and to ultimately die?
I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I am a 22 year old female. I am involved with the
Miss America Organization. Contestants in this scholarship program must choose a platform to
promote locally and possibly statewide and nationwide. In 1995, I chose "Educating Children About
the Hazards of Tobacco". I have a strong motivation to help our children to make the right decision
about using tobacco. I am a volunteer speaker for the Karmano's Cancer Institute's H.O.T Program
(Hazards of Tobacco). I speak to children and teens in local schools in order to educate them about the
hazards of tobacco, including how the industry targets them.
I wrote to the President in 1995 regarding this same issue. I was happy to see at that time that a
President had finally recognized tobacco as a problem among our children and teens. However, it
seems that little has been done to help this problem. I still see Billboards that CLEARLY target
children and teens (i.e. "B Kool" for Kool cigarettes). There are still vending machines. The number
of young smokers has actually increased.
We need to do something and we need to do it now. You are aware that 3,000 kids try smoking every
single day. What are you going to do to protect our children from this industry that sees our childrens'
addiction and death as their livelihood?
I am doing what I can to help the children at a local level. I am competing in a local pageant in the
Miss America Organization. I previously held a local title that made it easier to spread the message to
children. If I am able to eventually win Miss Michigan, I will have the opportunity to help children
throughout the state. IfI am able to eventually win Miss America, I will be able to educate children
everywhere in this country. That is my ultimate goal. Through my time and effort, I believe I can
make a difference.
