THE NATIONAL BOARD FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHING STANDARDS HONORS
PRESIDENT CLINTON FOR HIS OUTSTANDING WORK IN EDUCATION
Mr. Clinton is presented with the first annual James A. Kelly Award for Advancing Accomplished
Teaching, named after NBPTS founding president.
ARLINGTON, VA- The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
honored President Clinton for his outstanding work in education and presented him with the James A.
Kelly Award for Advancing Accomplished Teaching at a White House ceremony, Thursday, January 4,
2001.
The award was named after the organization's founding president to recognize and honor
individuals who have been strong advocates of the teaching profession. Clinton has been sclected to be
the first recipient because of his commitment to promoting both high standards for teachers and the
growth and acceptance of National Board Certification.
In a statement issued prior to today's cvent, Clinton said, "At a time when we face difficult
choices about how best to prepare for the coming challenges, our devotion to education and to our
young people must stand absolutely firm. As accomplished teachers and members of the National
Board for Professional Teaching Standards, you have been at the forefront of this vital endeavor. Your
commitment to setting and achieving high standards for teaching and learning is fundamentally
changing the quality of education in America. I thank you for your abiding dedication to excellence in
cducation."
"President Clinton's legacy to America is that improving education remains one of the top
issues for the American public, says NBPTS Chair Barbara Kclley. "It was his leadership as co-
chairman of the Education Task Force of the National Governor's Association that brought education to
national prominence. Throughout his presidency, he has been a great friend to teachers and students."
"President Clinton has provided leadership for the National Board's work," says NBPTS
President Betty Castor. "He has a deep understanding of what makes schools successful and has

challenged us to provide at lcast 100,000 National Board Certified Teachers to America's schools by the
year 2006."
The National Board cstablished the James A. Kelly Award for Advancing Accomplished Teaching to
recognize and honor individuals who: demonstrate respect for and belief in America's teachers; value the
board's vision of accomplished teaching; show commitment to high standards for teachers; promote
National Board Certification in business, philanthropy, higher education, government, or community
leadership; and, advocate stronger, professional leadership roles for National Board Certified Teachers.
Kelly served as president and chief executive officer of NBPTS for 12-years before retiring in 1999.
Under his leadership, the National Board created a mission to establish rigorous standards for what
accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. Committed to clevating the teaching profession as a
means of providing a high quality education for all children, Kelly oversaw the first group of teachers who
achieved National Board Certification.
Founded in 1987, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent, non-
profit, non-partisan and non-government organization. There are nearly 10,000 National Board Certified
Teachers in the U.S. In addition, more than 13,000 teachers are expected to seek National Board
Certification this year.

Kelly Award for Advancing Accomplished\nTeaching, named after NBPTS founding president.\nARLINGTON, VA- The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)\nhonored President Clinton for his outstanding work in education and presented him with the James A.\nKelly Award for Advancing Accomplished Teaching at a White House ceremony, Thursday, January 4,\n2001.\nThe award was named after the organization's founding president to recognize and honor\nindividuals who have been strong advocates of the teaching profession. Clinton has been sclected to be\nthe first recipient because of his commitment to promoting both high standards for teachers and the\ngrowth and acceptance of National Board Certification.\nIn a statement issued prior to today's cvent, Clinton said, \"At a time when we face difficult\nchoices about how best to prepare for the coming challenges, our devotion to education and to our\nyoung people must stand absolutely firm. As accomplished teachers and members of the National\nBoard for Professional Teaching Standards, you have been at the forefront of this vital endeavor. Your\ncommitment to setting and achieving high standards for teaching and learning is fundamentally\nchanging the quality of education in America. I thank you for your abiding dedication to excellence in\ncducation.\"\n\"President Clinton's legacy to America is that improving education remains one of the top\nissues for the American public, says NBPTS Chair Barbara Kclley. \"It was his leadership as co-\nchairman of the Education Task Force of the National Governor's Association that brought education to\nnational prominence. Throughout his presidency, he has been a great friend to teachers and students.\"\n\"President Clinton has provided leadership for the National Board's work,\" says NBPTS\nPresident Betty Castor. \"He has a deep understanding of what makes schools successful and has\n- more\n1525 Wilson Blvd-Suite 500-Arlington, VA 22209-703-465-2700-FAX 703-465-2849\nSENT BY:6\n: 1- 4- 1 : 10:38 :\n02/01027\n202 +00 0001 U/\n2\nchallenged us to provide at lcast 100,000 National Board Certified Teachers to America's schools by the\nyear 2006.\"\nThe National Board cstablished the James A.
