Subject: Re: Participants receiving SSI
Georgia,
I'm referring to benefits administered by the federal Social Security
Administration. Monthly SSI benefits are jointly funded by the federal
government and each state. I don't have data on the eligibility
requirements for benefits administered solely by the state. Your state's
Department of Social Services will. The Social Security Administration
administers another program called Social Security Disability Insurance,
(SSDI) and some of the women in your program may receive this
insurance. There is no asset limit for this program, but there is an
income limit. The benefit is based on how long the recipient worked in a
position that earned him or her benefits credits. Refer to
http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10029.html for more information on SSDI.
I second everything you said about the importance of a vehicle and a
computer.
There is some work being done on permitting a vehicle to be an IDA goal in
certain cases. I will forward an email regarding what has been done. If
participant is eligible for SSI, she is eligible for a PASS. If you can
show that the computer will be used towards work goal, such as
telecommuting, a PASS is the best option right now. If S2779 is passed,
regulations may make it easier to save towards a car or a computer.
The World Institute on Disability is conducting research regarding IDA
service to people with disabilities. We welcome everybody's input.
