April 10, 1998 On the 30th Anniversary of the Federal Fair Housing Act, President Clinton reaffirmed the Administration's budget commitments to enforcing civil rights and housing discrimination laws. He also addressed raising the Federal Housing Administration loan limit SO that more Americans can become homeowners. March 16, 1998 Vice President Gore declared Stamford, Connecticut, as one of the first sixteen cities to be declared a Brownfields Showcase Community and awarded the city up to $1 million for environmental cleanup and economic revitalization. The cleanup projects would result in new housing and commercial developments. February 9, 1998 Vice President Gore joined Housing Secretary Cuomo in detailing how the Administration's $25 billion budget for the Department of Housing and Urban Development would benefit America's communities. January 27, 1998 In his State of the Union Address, President Clinton urged the nation and Congress to give poor families more help to move into homes of their own and use tax cuts to spur the construction of more low-income housing. January 21, 1998 The President announced that the budget would include 50,000 new welfare-to-work housing vouchers to help families move closer to a job, to reduce a long commute, or to secure more stable housing to eliminate emergencies that keep them from getting to work every day on time. January 13, 1998 In Chicago, Vice President Gore announced an unprecedented 40 percent expansion of the low-income housing tax credit in the Administration's FY 1999 budget. The credit would help build an additional 150,000 to 180,000 affordable housing units over the next five years. 1997 December 22, 1997 Vice President Gore and HUD Secretary Cuomo announced $865 million in grant assistance to help homeless Americans find housing and become self-sufficient. An additional $165 million funds the Emergency Shelter Grants program to meet housing and poverty needs in communities throughout the nation. December 10, 1997 At the Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx, President Clinton announced the release of $96 million to help create affordable housing in New York through the innovative HOME Program. He also announced another $250 million in corporate investments to help build affordable housing in New York City over the next three years. November 7, 1997 Vice President Gore announced $217.3 million in grants to housing authorities and assisted housing developments around the nation to continue the Clinton Administration's fights against drug dealing and other crimes. 10
