Prior Announcements by the First Lady for Funding Dc Public School Facilities Repairs and Construction Projects: On March 04, 1997, First Lady Hillary Clinton along with Secretaries Riley and Rubin visited Ketcham Elementary school to announce $18,252,080 going to DC's Control Board to be spent on repairs and construction needs of the DC public schools. (These proceeds from the privatization of Connie Lee were transferred to the Control Board from the Treasury Department on March 4, 1997. The amount of $18,252,080 represents the full appraisal value of the shares of Connie Lee stock held by the Department of Education after deduction for costs and expenses related to the sale.) Also, on October 07, 1997, First Lady Hillary Clinton and Acting Deputy Secretary Mike Smith visited Malcolm X Elementary School to announce $42 million going to the Control Board for reform or repairs and construction of DCPS pursuant to the Student Loan Marketing Assoc. Reorganization Act of 1996. (The control Board decided that all funds would be spent on repairs and construction.) These funds were provided as a result of the privatization of Sallie Mae -- approx. $37 million in proceeds from the sale of SLM Holding Co. common stock warrants (was provided in September 1997) and $5 million licensing fee relating to the company's ongoing use of the "Sallie Mae" name (was transferred on October 6, 1997). c:data\mail\event.eat
