NEW EDUCATION STUDY SHOWS U.S. SCHOOLS FACE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR OF
RECORD ENROLLMENT
Celebrating School Modernization Day today, President Clinton renewed his call for more schools,
classrooms and teachers in school districts across the country and cited a new U.S. Department of Education
report that details record numbers of children attending schools nationwide for the third consecutive year
ar.]
School Modemization Day events are being held in more than 80 communities nationwide today to call attention
to the need for practical investments in local schools.
According to a special annual back-to-school report prepared by the Education Department's National
Center for Education Statistics, total public and private school enrollment this fall will be a record S2.7 million,
surpassing last fall's all time high by 500,000. New enrollment records will continue to be set for at least the
next ten years -- by 2008, 54.3 million young people are expected to be attending elementary and secondary
school. In addition this year marks another all-time high being reached as total college enrollment will rise to a
record 14.6 million, up from 14.3 million in 1997, and an increase of some 240,000 students.
"This recurring theme of record student enrollment should motivate us to move faster to build and
modernize schools, reduce class size to give students the individual attention they need in the early grades, and
provide educational technology in classrooms so our young people are prepared for the Information Age," said
U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley. "These projections show that record enrollments will continue -
that means we must face the reality this presents and prepare for the future."
