The waiver will be part of a larger effort to mobilize college student and adult math tutors. A. Background on Department's Mathematics Initiative Over the past 18 months, the Department has built a mathematics initiative in partnership with the National Science Foundation and requested $33 million in the FY99 budget to support elements of the initiative. The initiative has six strategies: 1. Build public understanding and engagement. A key element of this effort is a national information campaign that we and NSF will launch next Spring to show the public what mathematics middle school students should be able to do and why math is critical for students' future opportunities. 2. Improve the preparation of future teachers of mathematics by challenging colleges and universities and providing good information and tools. Work in this area includes supporting the development of new standards for the mathematical preparation of future teachers. 3. Develop opportunities and Incentives for more effective professional development of teachers of mathematics by providing good information and tools. We are developing high quality professional development materials as well as working to improve implementation of the Eisenhower program. 4.
