National Institute on MEDIA and the FAMILY™ WHAT IS THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON MEDIA AND THE FAMILY AND WHAT DOES IT DO? THE MISSION OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON MEDIA AND THE FAMILY IS TO MAXIMIZE THE BENEFITS AND MINIMIZE THE HARM OF MEDIA ON CHILDREN AND FAMILIES THROUGH RESEARCH, EDUCATION, AND ADVOCACY. The National Institute on Media and the Family: Serves as a national resource to provide information about media to parents and other caring adults, so they can make wise media choices. Develops content-based ratings, called "KidScoreᵀ (originally named Children's Impact Statements), on media products that are likely to affect children, including: television programs, movies, video and computer games, advertisements, and Internet sites aimed at children. Conducts research on media's impact on children. Develops partnerships with national organizations and corporations who are committed to maximizing the benefits and minimizing the harm of media on children and families. These partnerships are formed to develop new ways to empower parents to make wise use of the media. Develops tools to help parents and other caring adults understand media's impact on children. Currently, the Institute offers videotapes ("Unplug Your Kids"); books (Selling Out America's Children) by Dr. David Walsh; audiocassettes ("Media and the Mind"); educational pamphlets ("Media Health Checklist"); lectures, seminars and other presentations ("Selling Out America's Children," "Media and the Mind," "Manufactured Messages," "Unplug Your Kids", and "KidScore Critical Viewing").
