As per our discussion this summer, I am following up on the request
for Mrs. Clinton to be interviewed by Phyllis George for her
upcoming TNN special. I know that Phyllis had discussed this
directly with Mrs. Clinton's office and Mrs. Clinton's response was
very favorable to a taping sometime in October or November.
You have always been so straightforward and helpful with our
requests and I really appreciate your effort in helping this thing
happen. Trying to manage the First Lady's schedule has got to be a
gigantic task.
I'll give you a call in the next couple of days to follow up and
hopefully Mrs. Clinton's schedule for the next month will have an
opening. Obviously, we will be totally flexible to accommodate
whatever time is possible.

Questions for Phyllis George/TNN Interview
1. You and I have know each other for a long time. But I've
got to tell you, driving up to the front of the White House is
overwhelming. Do you ever get used to the fact that you live
here? That you are the First Lady?
-- I still get chills when I walk into the White House. It is
such a special place with a real sense of magic. There are burn
marks on the wall outside the North portico, when I see that I
can't help but think of the history that the house is filled with
and the many people who have called this place home.
-- We have made the second floor homey, so that when we go up
there, we are able to relax as a family.
2. Can you actually maintain any sense of privacy? Any sense
of normal family life?
-- You know one thing that has really been great is that since
the Oval office is not far away from the residence, it's kind of
like living over the store. Chelsea can go over there when she
gets home from school and visit the President, and we eat dinner
together most of the time. Also, we have remodeled some of the
rooms on the second floor, which is considered the private
residence, so it feels more like a home. And we make the time to
spend together as a family.
3. We've all seen the press shots of you on vacation with your
family. But can you really have a "vacation" and relax?
-- Yes. We have really loved our vacations together. Last
summer when we were in Wyoming, we really had a great time,
hiking, bike riding, fishing and camping. Although it was kind
of funny when we went camping, because we were not alone, there
were tents with secret service agents very near by.
4. You've been very protective of Chelsea during the past three
years. How does she handle being First Daughter?
-- I think she's handled it very well, and we are so proud of
her. She has made lots of friends and has them over a lot for
sleep overs and I think that has really helped.
5. As the mother of two teenagers, I know there are times that
my kids look at me like I just landed from Mars. Chelsea's a
teenager. Does the First Lady of the United States get those
looks from her daughter as well?
-- Oh yes. Recently I suggested that she may want to put on a
sweater when she was going out, and I got one of those looks.

6. What do you find are the biggest challenges facing you as a
Mom right now?
-- Being able to make the time to spend with my daughter. And
letting go, as my daughter approaches the big decisions about
college, she's growing up.
7. How about the challenges of being a wife? Granted, you two
probably argue over various domestic and foreign policy issues,
but do you ever fight about who left the top off the toothpaste
or home front stuff like that?

Do you miss the autonomy of having your own law career?
-- No. I really enjoy the opportunity that I have had as First
Lady to work on issues that I care about and have cared about for
over 25 years, children and families. And I enjoy doing my part
to help the President do what he thinks is right for the country.
9. As America's most prominent 'working woman" you inspire us
all. But how do you handle the juggling act?
-- I do what thousands of American women do every day, I get up
and try to do what I think is right for my family, for myself and
for the country.
10. While I guess it goes with the territory, you've had your
share of rough runs over the past few years. How do you
personally handle the pressure?
-- You know, my Mother once gave me some great advice, and that
is that you should take criticism seriously, but not personally.
So that's what I try to do.
11. Your clothing is analyzed
every hair style reported on.
How do you feel when the press males more comments about your
looks than about your actions?
-- I think it goes with the territory.
12. You've played a very different role than most past First
ladies
leading decisions in various policies. How has your
professional aggressiveness helped your husband's efforts? How
have you recovered from your work on health care reform? And how
do you turn that around?
13. Will your lack of success in the health care situation keep
you out of a policy-decision role?

14. Having always championed women's rights and the rights of
children, your speech given in China as the honorary chair of the
US delegation to the Women's Conference was spell-binding. How
do you continue these efforts? You're facing an election year.
What role will you play? What will be your personal agenda
during this crucial year?
-- Well, the President is very committed to following up on the
commitments made at the Beijing conference. He has established
an inter-agency taskforce to look at ways to implement these
commitments.
-- I will continue to support my husband and do what I can to get
the message out about the important work that his administration
has done and will continue to do.
15. The press has indicated that you will be playing a "more
traditional" role in this pre-election year emphasizing
motherhood and parenting and being the good little wife. Are
you?
-- I will continue to be the person that I have always been, and
will continue to support my husband in helping to move our
country forward.
16. You're being compared to Eleanor Roosevelt who reached out
to the American public writing a daily "diary" that was
published. Your syndicated newspaper column is one of your pet
projects. What is your goal with this? Will newspapers continue
to run the column during the election year or see that as a
conflict?
--Well, I was first approached with the idea of writing a column
shortly after the inauguration. And at the time I was just not
able to even think about doing it. But I began to think about
the idea about a year or so ago , and thought about using the
column as a way to highlight issues that I care about, or share
some of the many exciting and inspiring people I have met and
places that I have visited. It is also an opportunity to respond
to some of the hundreds and hundreds of questions that I am asked
every day in the mail that I receive.
17. You are currently writing a book
will readers find a
different Hillary that the public First Lady?
-- Writing this book has been a great experience. I hope that
people will find it to be a helpful resource and will raise
issues about our children and the things that we as a society can
do to make it possible for all our children to grow and become
the person God intends them to be.

18. What is the greatest misconception people have of you?
-- I think the misconceptions are created when the press only
shows one part of the story, one part of my day and perhaps edit
it in a way that doesn't tell the whole story. You know, if
someone took a polaroid picture of you at 8:30 in the morning,
and then used that do describe you, well, they'd miss what you're
doing at 12:30 PM, or dinnertime and that creates an incomplete
picture.
19. You once were perceived as sort of asking the press how to
change your image. How did they respond? Have you actually
tried to change your image?
-- No, I haven't. I am the same person that I have always been,
and will continue to be.
20. Has the press treated you fairly?
21. I'm privileged to have often witnessed your stunning sense
of humor and sense of fun. Do you get a chance to exercise that
in your current life?
-- Yes. We spend a lot of time together as a family playing card
games and laughing, you've got to have laughter.
22. You and I share a great passion as champions of "The
American Way" with you love of and support of American crafts.
How does your support help that industry?
-- Well you know I have always been a fan of American art and
crafts. And since coming to the White House, I have had a unique
opportunity to help to highlight the very best of American
crafts, and I hope that with the White House Craft collection,
which we collected at Christmas '93 and has since become a
travelling art exhibit, that it will give people a sense of pride
and just enjoyment.
19. In the past three years, what do you feel has been your
greatest accomplishment? What has been the greatest
disappointment?
-- I'm very proud of the things that my husband has done to help
and get our country on the right track, lowering the unemployment
rate, fighting the good fight on the budget priorities, signing
the crime bill, Americorps program, signing the Family and
Medical Leave Act these are the things I am truly proud of. I've
been disappointed by the level of divisiveness and negativism
that has become the debate. The attempts to drive wedges between
people and tearing them down when we should be focussing on
working together to build a future. Let's debate the issues on
their merits, not make it personal.

22. If you had one day of anonymous freedom right now and could
do anything you wished without public scrutiny, what would you
do?
-- You know, i have to tell you that one of the things I really
miss is just doing the simple things, like driving to the grocery
store or taking my daughter shopping. Which is just harder to do
now.
