FIRST LADY HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON
VIDEOTAPED REMARKS
HISPANIC AMERICAN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION
19TH ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
FEBRUARY 26, 1998
Good Evening. I am honored to join you tonight in paying tribute to the scholarship
winners and the businesses and individuals who are opening doors of opportunity in my home
town of Chicago and throughout our nation.
I'd like to acknowledge just a few of the people who made this 19th Annual Awards
Banquet -- and the success it celebrates -- possible. The co-chairs: Governor Edgar, Mayor
Daley, and Cook County President Stroger. Alderman Danny Solis. And the leaders and
members of HACIA -- especially President Dominic Delgado and Founder Rodrigo D'Escoto
[DES-KOH-TO].
None of us got to where we are today without standing on the shoulders of another. And
none of us will ever get to where we need to go tomorrow without reaching back to lift up
someone who comes after us. The President has made it clear that we must all do our parts to
create those "Bridges to Success" that you commemorate tonight. And he has challenged each of
us to engage in a national dialogue about race that brings us together, instead of driving us apart.
I want to commend HACIA and each of you for working together to create real
opportunities for young people, for Latinos, for all minorities -- indeed for all Americans. I hope
you have a wonderful evening.
