Thanks for getting back to me yesterday. Here is a draft copy of
our 1994 brochure as well as a copy of Mrs. Clinton's invitation to
participate in the 1994 Robert Wood Johnson Community Health
Leadership Program awards ceremony.
This year's group (who will be announced publicly at the
ceremony) include a nurse who runs a housing coalition for elders, an
obstetrician who founded a public/private countywide midwifery clinic
for uninsured women, the executive director for a home for HIV+ kids,
a social worker who runs an agency to help chronically ill and
severely disabled kids, among others. The states represented include
California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, New
York, Puerto Rico and Vermont.
For planning purposes, we've identified May 25th as the most
advantageous date for the ceremony and (tentatively) have reserved
space in the Treasury Building and Hotel Washington. Dr. Steven
Schroeder. President of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, will
participate. All of the awardees' U.S. Senators and Congresspeople
will be invited. Certainly, we would be thrilled to change any and
all plans should Mrs. Clinton be able to participate in any way. I
spoke with Lisa Caputo a few days ago--she is tracking down our
request from her end. We will continue to hold off on inviting anyone
in her stead until we get a signal one way or another.
Any additional guidance, suggestions or advice you can give me
would be greatly appreciated! I am only bothering you because I think
this is such a great program and opportunity for Mrs. Clinton to

It is our pleasure to invite Mrs. Clinton to participate in the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Community Health Leadership
Program awards ceremony next Spring. Our staff spoke with
Bob Boorstin, Special Assistant to the President for Policy
Coordination, who recommended we contact you directly about Mrs.
Clinton's participation and the possibility of holding the
ceremony at the White House.
The Community Health Leadership Program honors ten enterprising
and resilient people who have recognized significant health needs
in their own communities and have found innovative ways to fill
some of the gap areas created by the current health care system.
These leaders receive $100,000, $5000 of which is a personal
stipend and $95,000 of which helps them to fulfill some program
dreams. The program's first recipients, awarded in 1993, have
thus far generated a great deal of excitement. The group
includes: a formerly homeless man who now directs the storefront
for substance abusers in the South Bronx that he once came to as
a client; a physician in San Francisco who founded a program
directly responsive to the needs of grandparents fulfilling a
parenting role for their grandchildren in place of their
substance-abusing children; a South Dakotan nurse who built the
country's first community-owned and operated health center on an
Indian reservation; and a woman who turned a one-room free
pediatric clinic into a comprehensive clinic for migrant
farmworkers and their families.
We would be honored to have Mrs. Clinton take part in our
ceremony. Her tireless dedication, commitment and effective
leadership in finding solutions to our nation's health care
crisis reflects the values of our program and the leaders it
support.
