MARSHALL FROM: Bobbie Greene Bitsey Folger RE: Slatkin Event The idea for a recital given by the Slatkins in the White House was born during a conversation between Linda Slatkin and the President back in the spring of '97. The two were having a conversation at an event in the White House. When the President learned that Linda was a professional singer, he suggested that the two play in the White House at a future date. Bitsey was suggested by Melanne to be the liaison with the NSO organization. Many dates have been suggested but thus far no event has been scheduled. Attached are a few of the memos dating back to July 1997. The latest list except for May 13th is still current. The Slatkins are excited about the possibility and await word of the scheduling. Ann asked me to propose dates in January, February and March. Leonard and I are going to take a look at his schedule, when he is here next Tuesday. July 29, and come up with some alternate dates. I will fax these over to Ann Stock. ( have talked with Bitsy about this. I will send you and Bitsy copies of the fax with the new suggested dates that I send to Ann Stock. Hope your summer is going well. Beverly CC: Bitsy Folger Mar 26-98 11:14A folger*werkman 202 338 7495 P.03 2029100140 PAGE 01 NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Leonard Slaikin, Music Director John F. We can suggest: June 7,8,9,10,14,15,16,17 or 23-30. Linda's preference would be for any of the June 7,8,9,10 dates because Michel Camillo will be here for the Caribbean Festival with the NSO and she says he would bring the house down. We could also suggest May 13 or 15, but Linda and Leonard will just have returned from extensive travelling and wouldn't have had much time to prepare, These May dates should only be considered if none of the June dates will work. 1 am holding all of these dates on Leonard's calendar and will continue to do so until I hear from you. Thanks for your help. Have a great time at the Opera! Apparantly, he took it pretty well- - the blow was somewhat softened by the opportunity to compete for the other book on the decorative arts at the White House. I'll ask Neil to call Gottlieb and discuss the project ( after the fuss over the Egg Roll subsides.) I'm telling you all this since I have the feeling you'll be the next to speak to Barbara Lee- - hopefully, she will have heard about the book decision before she gets to you. *I've asked Bitsey to send you some background info on the Slatkin musicale. It's a story but I'm no longer certain of the details- - you should have it tomorrow.
