July 23, 1998 Noa Meyer Office of the First Lady Room 100, OEOB 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Noa; Thank you for meeting with me to discuss your position in the First Lady's Office. The position interests me and I look forward to meeting Bobbi Greene. I know my experiences with advance work and my internship would prove beneficial to the position. Enclosed you will find two writing samples. One is a letter I drafted during an internship at the Paris, Kentucky Chamber of Commerce encouraging donations by members. The other is a paper 1 wrote for a writing in the arts class 1 took in college. The review discusses the movie Evita. I hope these will be sufficient. Again, I appreciate you taking the time to meet with me. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Stephanie Stephanie L. Baker March 13, 1997 Dear Chamber Member, As a new year has recently begun, we have entered the planning phase of our yearly activities. We are excited to say that plans for the annual Golf Tournament, April 28, and the annual Jazz on the Creek Festival are well underway. As we provide such activities for your enjoyment, we hope you will consider giving to the activities as well as participating in them. In order to avoid overkill, because we know you get many requests, we are simply sending you our plans to see if you can fit us into yours. The Golf Tournament is an activity to get chamber members together to enjoy a day of participation in a favorite pastime. We would simply like to see each participant walk away from the golf course with something, even if it was a bad day at the course. For this reason, we would appreciate any coupons or gift certificates you would like to donate. These donations will not to be sold to raise money, rather they will be awarded to participants in order to assure no golfer leaves empty handed. Jazz on the Creek will take place on Saturday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m. It will once again not only provide entertainment for the community, but raise funds with which the Chamber can provide more services. This year, we would like to conduct a silent auction at Jazz on the Creek. In order for such an auction to occur, we will need auction items for which spectators may bid. Supplying an item for the silent auction will not only help with fundraising for future Chamber services, but will allow members of the community to become more familiar with services and products Chamber members provide. Because the Chamber operates on limited funds, events such as these are vital to the continuation of an active Chamber in our area. Your time, efforts and donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact the Chamber office at 987-3205. Sincerely, Stephanie Baker Evita Review 2/19/97 "She didn't say much, but she said it loud," are the words sung by Che (Antonio Banderas) during one of his many songs. The statement, although buried deep within the verses, summarizes the legacy of Eva Peron, the once first lady and heroine of Argentina. To say that Evita, the film version of Andrew Lloyd-Webber's renowned musical, simply tells the story of Eva Peron's life would be an understatement. The songs and music make it much more than that, they transform what could have been a lethargic biographical movie into a moving display of a woman adored by millions. From the opening scene in which Peron's death is announced to an audience at the cinemas, to the final scene of mourners filing, one-by-one to view Peron as she lay in state, the music takes hold of your gut and does not let go. It is through the music that you feel the pain of a young Eva Peron as she is torn from the funeral of her middle class father because she and her siblings-born to his mistress-are banished from attendance, and you feel the excitement that pulses through her veins as she stands above millions chanting her name. Although the music in Evita is unparalleled, thanks to Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Nigel Wright and Alan Parker, Music Directors for the film, the movie would not have been such a success without the voices of Madonna, as Eva Peron, and Antonio Banderas, as Che. Although Madonna's vocal talent is no secret, her ability to perform with such emotion elevated the tone of the movie from merely interesting to moving. On the other hand, Banderas' vocal talents were all but unheard of before Evita. As Che, Banderas narrates the movie, quick to point out any flaw or short-coming of Eva. As the scene dictates, Che is anything from a bartender to a reporter. Although Eva Peron's adoration is well known, the string of men she used and discarded with little remorse is hardly common knowledge. Peron's mastery of seduction begins at the young age of 15, when Eva and her family blackmail a musician, Migaldi, to take Eva to Buenos Aires with him. Once in Buenos Aires, Eva fell on hard times, but soon was discovered by an adoring photographer who made her into a model. From there, it was one man after another, each being tossed out at the arrival of a new ride to success. Ironically, it was on January 22, 1944, at a performance of Migaldi, the first in her string of used men, that Eva met her final ticket to success, Juan Peron (Jonathan Pryce). Eva and Juan clicked instantly, and their relationship speedily became much of a national affair. The landed people of Argentina never accepted Eva as anything but a working class girl. In fact, they were appalled at the fact that she had become admired by millions. Neither were the military leaders wooed by Eva. In fact, they too were less than impressed by her abilities to woo the public, except when beneficial to them. Perhaps these feelings were merely reflections of suspicions that Eva was using Juan for her benefit, rather than representing the working class to him, as she so claimed. Interestingly enough, no matter how much Eva promised the people, and how little things changed, millions still adored her. Her death shocked and saddened millions, leading to vigils comparable, yet still overshadowing what the US witnessed with the death of its beloved Jackie O. Perhaps the people remained so entranced by Evita because her speeches were actually as entrancing as Madonna's musical versions of them. Withdrawal/Redaction Marker Clinton Library DOCUMENT NO. JOSEPHINE LASLEY HOOVER Post Office Box 3635 Davidson, NC 28036 January 9, 1998 Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton First Lady of the United States The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest Washington, D.C. 20500-2000 Dear Mrs. Clinton: I am writing in regards to our conversation following the funeral of Anne Kumpuris held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Little Rock, Arkansas on Friday, August 8, 1997. During this visit you suggested that I contact you personally regarding a position in the First Lady's Office. I am very interested in a position to develop public policy for children's opportunities or a position on your advance team beginning in September 1998. Enclosed is a resume for your review. As you note, I will graduate from Davidson College with a Vince Foster scholarship and a B.A. in history in May 1998. While attending Davidson I hold various leadership positions such as Honor Council Student Solicitor in which I diligently uphold the Honor Code to its highest degree. This fall semester I wrote a senior thesis which required extensive hours of creative research using both current and archival materials. In addition, I have broadened my education through travel abroad in France and England. My experience includes a summer internship in the White House Office of Public Liaison in Washington, D.C., as well as summer positions as a bank teller. I believe my background would be valuable to your office. I would like to talk with you regarding your needs and would welcome the opportunity to discuss my qualifications in greater detail either through a personal interview in Washington, D.C., or over the telephone. You may reach me at school at (P6/(b)(6) from Monday, January 12 until Friday, February 27, and then again from Monday. March 9 until Friday, April 10. I was asked to describe elements in Chinese art which relate to other aspects of Chinese culture or life. In Chinese music, silence is equally as important as sound. Much of the distribution of importance is essentially the same with regards to Chinese paintings. The silent areas that contain no ink speak as much to the viewer as the sonorous areas full of ink. This negative, or quiet, space in Chinese painting invites the viewer to imagine what could be there, if only the viewer might enter the painting. In Ma Yuan's painting, "On a Mountain Path," the viewer sees a man dressed in white robes with a servant behind him. At his feet are budding branches, which indicate springtime. He seems to stand on nothing solid yet remains solidly gazing at a bird in the nearby distance. We cannot see his full face and are left with only his profile that encourages us to follow his gaze into the distance of the painting. Ma Yuan counterbalances his positively detailed left foreground with vaguely suggested ink lines everywhere else. This abundant use of negative space emphasizes the Daoist belief in balance between opposing forces, light and dark. Another example of negative versus positive space is found in Liang Kai painting of the poet Li Bo. In this painting, we see very few distinct ink lines. Liang Kai only uses black ink to distinctly paint Li Bo's hair, his thoughtful eye (again we only see the gazing profile), his small lips and the tops of his shoes. The rest of his shape, beard, and mustache are lightly outlined with a wide brush stroke. There even appears a slight halo surrounding Li Bo which gives him a celestial quality. Liang Kai's use of negative space speaks more to the viewer than his positive space; the limited amount of distinct shapes emphasize the vast emptiness in which we live. The 07/27/98 MON 13:49 FAX 501 374 2380 GGHH, PLC 1 003 Hoover 2 viewer's gaze is focused upon Li Bo's face and then follows his gaze to the distance. These two paintings offer typical fundamental Daoist beliefs that one cannot have something without its exact opposite; there exists no light without dark to define the light; there exists no good without evil to define the good; there exists no life without death to define the life. Everything is in balance and harmony with nature, even paintings. Thus revered persons in Chinese society who are quiet are often the most powerful, especially when surrounded by others who incessantly talk. One who says the least often knows the most; one who says the most often knows the least. The second short selection is taken from a paper written for a history seminar on Napoleon Bonaparte, Spring 1998. In this, I introduce my topic: Napoleon's manipulation of the late 18th and early 19th century media, primarily focusing on court portraiture and newspaper war reports. Napoleon Bonaparte: Master of the Arts What is a great reputation? A big noise. The more noise you make, the farther it will go. Laws, institutions, monuments, nations, all this passes-but the noise it makes continues to vibrate through other generations.¹ Who could have told me, when we [Napoleon Bonaparte and L.A.F. Bourrienne] used to wander like two boobies through the streets of Paris, that one day I should be the master of France? My will-but a vague kind of will. Circumstances have done the rest. The wise thing, then is to take care of the things as they come, and this is what I am doing.² These two statements encompass several themes of Napoleon Bonaparte's rule about which historians have debated for some time: his contrived reputation and whether Napoleon's 'J. Christopher Herold, ed., trans. The Mind of Napoleon: A Selection from His Written and Spoken Words. New York: Columbia UP, 1955, 39. ²Ibid 43. GGHH, PLC J. 004 07/27/98 MON 13:49 FAX 501 374 2380 Hoover 3 personality determined his special place in history, or if the circumstances surrounding his rule produced his status as a leader. The first passage suggests that Napoleon Bonaparte, arguably France's most dynamic leader in history, does not lay emphasis upon the things he created as First Consul and later as Emperor-the Napoleonic Code, the ecoles, the Arc De Triumph, or the French nation-but instead prefers the noise that he creates, his reputation, per se. This thinking suggests that the contrived legend of Napoleon, which even continues in the speech of today's generation, is more important to Napoleon and to the rest of the world than his physical accomplishments. Perhaps this reasoning is exactly why Napoleon was so careful with his image. By censoring virtually everything experienced by the public in the nineteenth century Napoleon could control his image, thus giving him the perceived security of control over the public's opinion of him. Napoleon launched a terrific campaign of propagandized paintings, military bulletins, and even musical compositions in order to evoke a tremendous feeling of nationalism among the French in the hopes that they would continue to support his rule. I am very interested to continue working in the White House, Jeff Forbes, a Special Assistant in Legislative Affairs, where I currently intern, recommended that I send you my resume. I have held various internships in many facets of California state government. Because of the spectrum of work I have completed, I adapt quickly to new environments and have the motivation to succeed at every position I acquirc. I realize that my federal experience is limited, but I feel my experience at the California State Capitol compensates for that and makes me an excellent candidate for a position in the White House. As an intern in Legislative Affairs I am aware of the qualities a successful staff person needs. I am a conscientious worker who is a good listener. These listening skills enable me to be a fast learner and contribute to my overall competence. Completing a degree in Political Science coupled with real world legislative work gives me a sense of how the White House operates. I feel that I am qualified to be part of this operation. My governmental internships and experiences, presented on the enclosed resume, show that I am an accomplished worker who is determined to succeed. I would greatly appreciate a chance to meet with you and interview for a position in your office. I can be reached at 202.456.6493 during the days, and P6/(b)(6) in the evenings.
