CHICA, Panama - Hillary Rodham Clinton trudged up a red, muddy mountainside
on the edge of Panama's rain forest Friday and found what she was looking for -

There, shyly at first, then with growing confidence, Faustina Nunez told

"We grew and grew, and our community was able to see that we were playing an

She and Panama's first lady, Dora Boyd de Perez, quizzed Ms. Nunez about the
ownership of the nursery plot, which is leased to them.
"We want to make sure you have the land, " Mrs. Clinton said, laughingly
explaining that both of the first ladies are lawyers.
The nursery is part of a larger reforestation project supported in
U.S. Agency for International Development. It is designed to ensure
there is enough fresh water to supply the locks of the Panama Canal.
Mrs. Clinton flew by helicopter over the canal's watershed area on her way to

SOURCE: Associated Press

Panama City, Panama Packing two trips to Latin America into a week, first
lady Hillary Rodham Clinton opened a three-day visit to Panama on Wednesday
aimed at giving women a bigger role in the region's democracies.
Hillary Clinton is joining a conference of first ladies from the region as
part of an effort to expand opportunities for women and children.
Her message
returns to Washington Friday night, then heads south again with President
Clinton on Sunday for Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela. Hillary Clinton also has
visits planned this year to Ireland and republics of the former Soviet Union.
The back-to-back visits to Latin America come at
leadership positions," states the Women's Leadership Conference of the
Americas, a network of women leaders, in a position paper.
Hillary Clinton's message is that women must be given "their rightful place"
in society on issues ranging from legal rights and freedom from violence to
access to health care and education, said her chief of staff, Melanne Verveer.
To reinforce that message, Hillary Clinton will witness the signing of an AID
grant for $ 4.5 million to the Inter-American Institute on Human Rights,
