ThANKS. Hay Peanes. May 26, 1993 Mrs. Hillary Clinton Frist Lady The United States of America. Dear Mrs. Clinton: It is with great honor that we enscribe this letter to you on behalf of all Americans who are in need of and who are intrested in quaility health care for all. I would like to highlight for you two areas of concern, that might infact be the very areas that will resolve the question as to How to implement a health care package that will cover all American's." But does not cripple the health system at the same time. The first would be to allow the Department of Education to produce a listing of all those Doctor's who have received some sort aide from the Department of Education at one point in their educational experience, that will allow you to produce a compent listing of those doctor's that are in fact eligible to participate within the core of starting up these kinds of services. Now naturally, this plan would have to cosign what ever plans that the congress would be willing to pass. Importantly enough in the same manner that the" PELL-GRANT PAYMENT FORM" is used to bill the U.S. Department of Education for the services rendered at Colleges, can be the same way in fact H...: United States Department of Education Can presue those doctor's who are eligable to serve these types of programs across the country. It would be as easy as mailing the Doctor's a similar form to pell. But this or these forms will be directed towards only those questions that are pertinent to record keeping. <e.g. the kind of doctor or she is,have they graduated, what and when they are available and etc.) They should be encoraged to participate within any of their local facilities. Those that refuse to respond can be perjuring, and should be dealt with as such. They should not have the luxury of not repaying their student loans, We scribe that the larger institutions, such as hospitals, insurance agencies and etc. Have the capablities of this type of transition and the means to buy and oversee these type of programs with in the smaller facilities. Do you really think that we can survie without everyone participating. We are 50 concerned about our children in all of our communities, that are being abused. But not in just all communities but more especially within the black coummunity. Due to such poor performances in many of the areas that confront, shape and help develop these coummunities. (e.g, crime , economical development, educational and etc.) That's why we here at the Mt. Pligrim Baptist Church at 408 North 9th, Street. In the heart of downtown Gadsden, Alabama believe, that, by not only having go health care, it will mean that we will have safer streets' more economical growth in that coumminty. So we and I as the author of this letter would like to request the following. 1) We have an old elemantry school, that we would like to provide a service to the coummunity that will allow some of these doctor's that have attended local college's at home and abroad that chance to provide quality health to abused children and their families. 2) This cannot and will not be such any easy task. But I ask you to Keep in mind that not all of these potential doctor's have children and or families. Some may or may not feel that they are ready to enter the medical practice first, without having worked a year of two first. The very same principal as some CPA'S, and Lawyers who serve the public before going into private practice. 3) Our facility, under the supervision of the Unveristy of Alabama's medical school, and or other well established hospitals and schools can provide the kind of health care that can and will make a difference and set a pace for the rest of our country to use as 211 example. again We would like to provide health care, couseling and concern to our abused child. Can you accept this project as a way to a way. Thank you. My God continue to bless your administration Suncerely, ind Reaues H.Edmond Reaves, 408 N. 9th Street Project Coordinator for the Gadsden Al, 35901 Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church (205) 546-9741 Rev H.L. The journalists and their readers, the concerned politicians and their constituents, did not know that the AAUW is yet another para- academic organization that has become highly political and ideological in recent years. Its charter is broad enough to include gender feminists, equity feminists, and nonfeminist women. But its present leadership has changed the association into an activist arm of gender feminism. Its cur- rent group of officers-executive director Anne Bryant, president Sharon Schuster, and Alice McKee, president of the AAUW educational founda- tion-are committed gender feminists who had expectations of what they would find when they initiated the self-esteem study. So a cool and objective look at the reported findings and the evidence for them is badly needed. Here IS how the AAUW summarizes the results of the survey in its MAW In a crucial measure of self-esteem, 60 percent of elementary school PRESERVATION PHOTOCOPY girls and 69 percent of elementary school boys say they are "happy the way I am." But, by high school. girls' self-esteem falls 31 points Best wishes, meant a great deal to me. Many, many thanks. much I appreciated your very kind letter. It Dear Carolyn: "Call to Action" brochure: to only 29 percent, while boys' self-esteem falls only 23 points to 46 percent.¹⁴ Girls are less likely than boys to say they are "pretty good at a lot of This note is overdue, but I wanted you to know how things." Less than a third of girls express this confidence, compared to almost half the boys. A 10-point gender gap in confidence in their abilities increases to 19 points in high school. The study found boys to be more likely to stick up for themselves in a disagreement with a teacher (28 percent of boys, 15 percent of girls); and boys are more likely than girls to "believe their career dreams will come true."¹⁰ The AAUW is happy to accommodate anyone who wants to see the "Call to Action" brochure and the "Shortchanging Girls" video: they have an 800 number for those who wish to order these and other gender bias materials they have developed. These readily available materials summa- rize the "findings." Getting hold of the actual Goldberg-Lake self-esteem study-the hard data on which all the claims are based-turned out to be far more difficult. You cannot order it through the 800 number. It IS not available in libraries. The only way to get a look at it is to buy it directly from the AAUW for $85. I was willing to do that, though It is very unusual that a study cited as authoritative by members of the United States Congress would be unavailable in any library. Even buying it turned out to be a problem, though. I read about you in the Wall Street Journal and was touched by your commitment to the First Lady and your efforts to create the positive press recognition she deserves. The Watts Health Foundation, which is a minority organization located in Los Angeles, California, has demonstrated that the spirit of the Clinton Administration's Health Care Reform can and will work. Because we feel that the average citizen needs to hear good news about health care, we are hoping the First Lady can appear at an October 1st fundraising event sponsored by Watts Health Foundation. At the same time, the First Lady's appearance will help to raise scholarship donations for inner- city high school graduates who want to pursue careers in health care. We would like to help the First Lady in any way we can. We can be flexible in coordinating her appearance with any campaign activity she or the President may be undertaking in California. If you have any ideas on how this event can be used to support both the inner-city students of Watts and Mrs. Clinton's Health Care program, please let us know. Any support you can provide us would be deeply appreciated. We would like for you to be the guest speaker at this event, the annual Birdell Chew Moore Scholarship Dinner of the Watts Health Foundation, which is being held at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, California. The Watts Foundation Community Trust is deeply committed to rebuilding community trust through health care. Helping young people pursue careers in health care is just one of many ways the organization is using creative programs and revenue sources to accomplish this goal. Dr. Clyde W. Oden is Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Watts Foundation Community Trust and President of the Watts Health Foundation, Inc., and is someone with whom you are familiar. He served as one of your advisors in the development of the Health Security Act of 1993, and was a breakfast guest at the White House when the President was introducing the formal proposal for health reform to the Nation. Dr. Oden has been president of the Watts Health Foundation for the last 15 years and he was instrumental in creating the Watts Foundation Community Trust two years ago. The Watts Health Foundation (WHF), as you may know, is one of the largest community- based health service organizations in the country. The Foundation started in 1967 as an Office of Economic Opportunity Demonstration Neighborhood Health Center, after the Watts Rebellion of 1965. WHF now operates United Health Plan, a 100,000 member federally qualified HMO, two federally qualified health centers, and 26 other social health programs ranging from AIDS outreach to geriatric and homebound services. Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu International First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton August 22, 1994 Page 2 More than 200,000 persons are served annually by this health services organization. The Watts Health Foundation, in concert with its HMO, United Health Plan, has served as a model of how high quality managed care can be provided to low income populations. Dr. Oden currently serves on the Board of Directors of Group Health Association of America (GHAA) and the California Association of HMOs (CAHMO). The Watts Foundation Community Trust is the fundraising initiative of the Watts Health Foundation. Its role is to develop revenue streams that support "orphan" health programs and projects of the Watts Health Foundation. These programs range from mobile pediatric medical centers (which are also supported by the Children's Health Fund of New York, and operated jointly with the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science) to scholarship programs for worthy but needy inner city students. Because your contribution is the key to our success, we can be flexible in the timing and format of your appearance to secure your participation. If October 1st is not available on your calendar, we would be happy to work with your scheduling office to combine your appearance with any campaigning activity you or the President may be undertaking in California. If you have any questions, please call me or my colleague Ms. Terry Ribb, who is assisting me with this initiative for WHF.
