The race, I would tell friends and colleagues from afar, would follow the
iron rules of New York

Grind them to dust, her advisers told Hillary Rodham Clinton. And she did.
Clinton bored the press with her droning speeches, moving from talk of the
economy to Social Security to health care to child care to mass
it, now, than her hero Eleanor Roosevelt.
She has achieved this because she has been given more, in so many
incalculable ways.
And now with this gift, Hillary Rodham Clinton must go out and do what she
has always managed to do. Prove herself. Over and over again.

more, much more. The book says the Clintons nearly divorced a decade ago
but stayed together after Mrs. Clinton offered to support her husband in the
presidential race they had both dreamed of by offering him cover against any and
all allegations of
Mrs. Clinton's representatives have dismissed the book, which quotes a number
of her friends, as a bunch of psycho-hooey.
But Sheehy, who also wrote "Passages," "New Passages" and "Men's Passages,"
calls it her "lucky 13th" book, landing just as Mrs. Clinton announced that she
did intend to run for the Senate. The psychological profiles Sheehy calls
"character studies" have been her specialty since 1984, when she wrote
write her own book," Sheehy said. "She can reserve the right to try.' "
After interviewing Clinton intimates, Sheehy sketched Mrs. Clinton as the
daughter of a chilly father and a mother who trained her to keep emotions in
check. That legacy is not the family's
less eager to connect the dots about her own character. And why wouldn't
she be? That stuff can be painful, whereas puzzling over the mysteries of
Mrs. Clinton sounds like a lot of fun.
As was a long chat with Sheehy at the luncheon spot she had chosen in the
Park
fur? Reported that along with the lobster tail she enjoyed two glasses
of Chardonnay, the last one cut with club soda?
Certainly Mrs. Clinton, who seems never to have wanted anyone's sympathy,
gets little enough of it in "Hillary's Choice" (Random House)
didn't really like people all that well, and wondered if it's possible to
be a "compassionate misanthrope." Sheehy even writes up Mrs. Clinton's "hokey

Mrs. Clinton's campaign spokesman, Howard Wolfson, disputed the book on
"Larry King Live" last week, specifically challenging Sheehy's assertion that
Mrs. Clinton's father did not attend her college graduation.

distracted by the author's many interesting stories about Mrs. Clinton. (Also by
Helmsley's little white dog, which was running under tables, all over the
restaurant, then, periodically, was returned to its mistress and covered
being launched by Clay Felker, whom she later married.
Now 62, Sheehy suggested that there might be as many sequels in Hillary
Clinton as there were in her 1976 best-seller, "Passages."
"I saw her in East Hampton and she's, 'Oh, Gail, I haven't seen you
couldn't you?' I said, 'My biography of you is finished.' She said, 'So
soon?' And I said, 'But this is only Volume 1. "
Mrs. Clinton's reaction? "Stricken!" she said, laughing. "It was
delicious."
