FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: MARSHA BERRY MARCH 20, 1998 STEVEN COHEN (revised) JULIE MASON 202/456-2960 FIRST LADY HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON'S TRIP TO AFRICA Washington, DC - First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will travel in Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, Botswana, and Senegal with President Clinton from March 22 - April 2, 1998. This trip occurs one year after her March 1997 goodwill trip to the African countries of Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Eritrea, Zimbabwe, and Uganda. It was in Uganda that the First Lady announced that the President would visit Africa this year. The First Lady will have an opportunity to see firsthand the progress the citizens of the region have made in the past year. Highlights of the trip will include visits to schools to emphasize the necessity of education for boys and girls, and a major address by the First Lady in Uganda. There, she will stress the importance of human rights to the democratic progress of all nations and spotlight important challenges that remain - - such as missing children and violence against women. The First Lady will engage in a number of separate activities during this trip. These include: -- a visit to a daycare center in Ghana which will highlight how women are working together to improve the quality of their lives and the lives of their families; -- a speech at Makerere University in Uganda in which she will reaffirm the role of human rights as the cornerstone of human progress; -- a return visit to the Victoria Mxenge housing project outside Capetown to see the dramatic progress the community has made in the past year; -- a discussion with women in Senegal on challenges to their health. Specific details of the First Lady's public schedule will be released as they are available. Along with these separate events, the First Lady will accompany the President to events throughout the trip. Please refer to the President's press schedule for details of their activities together. ###
