season. The White House selected a diverse representation of entertainers from around the
nation -- 25 states and the District of Columbia are represented and approximately 2000

The entertainment groups encompass a wide array of musical genres. The choral groups will
represent styles ranging from madrigal, folk, gospel, barber shop, to traditional music. Also
scheduled to perform -- string and brass ensembles, concert pianists, and an acoustic guitar
duo.
The performers that are participating include: elementary school children, high school and
college students, recording artists, and community and church entertainers.
The following have five groups that will be performing at White House special events:
- Brooklyn Youth Chorus ( 35 performers) = Tree Arrival Ceremony; November 27
- Tarumi Violinists (15 performers) = Press Preview; December 2
- Windham Chamber Singers (38 performers) = Congressional Ball; December 4
- American Boychoir (28 performers) = Pageant of Peace; December 5

The following is information about some of the groups that will be performing during the

The Moscow String Quartet is a group of women from the former Soviet Union who
moved to the United States and made Denver, Colorado their home. They received their

quartets emerging from the former Soviet Union. Their venues have taken them to great
concert halls all over the world. They have been featured in three documentaries airing in
Russia, London, and most recently in Denver.
D.C. Boys Choir is a group of boys from 9 to 13 years of age that are representative of
various public schools in the Washington, D.C. area. This talented group of boys have

Ms. Ann Stock
Social Secretary to the White House
1600 PA. Ave., NW Suite 200 East Wing
Washington, DC 20500
Dear Ms. Stock:
This letter is in response to the request of Ms. Melanie Pearlman, for a letter of
interest from the DC Boys Choir. The choir is interested in performing at the
White House on December 21, 1996 (afternoon).
The choir is comprised of boys from the D C Public School system and range in
age from 9 to 13 and are under the direction of Ms. Eleanor Stewart. We returned
from our First European Concert Tour in June, 1996. The group was chosen to
represent the District of Columbia at Austria's Millennium Celebration. Our
repertoire includes classical, gospel, folk and contemporary music.
We are currently scheduled to perform at Children's Hospital as part of our
community awareness/contribution Give Something Back Series". The boys are
taught to share, develop social interests and academic skills. As the younger
generation expresses their joy and happiness I must say singing at the
White House for guests would be "real cool and create an even greater memory".
Hopefully, we will be permitted to perform. Thanking you in advance for this
opportunity to "spark your interest".
For further information you can contact Ms. Eleanor Stewart at (202) 576-6247
or Mr. Al Mosley at (202) 283-1360.

in the "American Musical Salute to Austria"
The D.C. Boys Choir-District of Columbia Public Schools has been selected to be
a representative of Washington, D.C. in a major 1996 international music festival in
Europe, commemorating Austria's Millennium. Mrs. Eleanor A. Stewart was informed
of this selection based upon recommendations of state music officials, past achi-
evements and current superior ratings.
The D.C. Boys Choir will perform in Austria's four imperial cities: Vienna, Salzburg,
Graz and Innsbruck from May 22 - June 4, 1996 in the "American Musical Salute
to Austria" recognized by the mayors of Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, and Innsbruck.
A complete program of performances, sightseeing, cultural exchanges, orientation
meetings and other cultural activities will be part of the experience for the D.C. Boys
Choir. The Choir will perform for enthusiastic Austrian audiences, and will also have
opportunities to see the performances of other American groups, who are also
participating in the "Music Celebration". Sightseeing in Vienna, Graz, Salzburg, Innsb
ruck and other regions of Europe will enrich participants' understanding and apprecia-
tion of the dynamic cultural present and past of Austria.
The D.C. Boys Choir was organized in January 1993 under the direction of Eleanor
Stewart, music teacher at Powell and Thomson Elementary Schools. Members of The
Choir are fourth, fifth and sixth grade boys,. currently representing nine elementary
schools in the Washington, D.C. public school system. Rehearsals are held only once
a week for two hours at Powell School. The Choir performs classical, folk songs,
gospel and contemporary music. The Gifted and Talented program sponsors The
Choir and has provided various types of support. The community sponsor is D.C.
Chartered Health Plan Foundation, a non-profit community out-reach organization.
The choir relies on volunteers to assist with various activities such as fund raising,
supervision at rehearsals, field trips, maintenance of wardrobe for performances, and
academic and personal counseling.
Experiences in The Choir provide opportunities which may not be otherwise
available to students. Through school and community performances, participation in
workshops and conferences, travel and other experiences, the talented male student
develops a deeper appreciation for the arts. Stewart says she started this choir
because she "recognized the need to channel young boys energies into positive
activities that will help them grow and develop into productive citizens who are proud
of themselves and of their accomplishments". Mrs. Stewart, a graduate of Hampton
University, has developed several choirs during her tenure with the D.C. Public
Schools. In addition to cultivating musical talents, activities focus on: social and
cultural experiences that create respect for ethnic and cultural differences; academic

TARUMI VIOLINISTS
MAR I 4 1996
March 14, 1996
Dear Ms. Salsitz:
You may recall, on December 10, 1994, The Tarumi Violinists had the privilege of performing
at a reception held inside the White House for the Department of Secret Service. It was a big thrill for
all of the children.
I am happy to report that since then The Tarumi Violinists have been very busy spreading a
message of love and world peace through their music by supporting numerous philanthropic causes and
participating in musical cultural exchanges.
In July and August of 1995, we toured Japan representing the United States at the 50th
Anniversary Peace Ceremonies of the bombing of Hiroshima. While on tour, we performed for victims
of the bombing and victims of the devastating earthquakes in Kobe, Japan. In September, 1995, we
once again were asked to perform at the United Nations General Assembly. In October, 1995, we
roduced a musical video specifically for our US troops in Bosnia which was forwarded by the
Department of Defense. In November 1995, the Tarumi Violinists shared the stage at the Kennedy
Center in Washington, DC with the Venezuelan Youth Symphony Orchestra.
But perhaps our most unforgettable experience came last month when we were received by and
performed for Pope John Paul II in Rome, truly an incredible event. While in Rome we also taped for
the Vatican Radio station which will be broadcast around the world on March 27, 1996.
I think you will agree that these incredibly talented youngsters are doing a fine job of giving
something back to their communities and trying to make the world a better place. I would at this time,
like to offer their services to you for any up coming social events within the White House. It is, of
course, still their dream to meet and play for or even with President Clinton. A video tape done by
CNN is available for review.
I look forward to hearing from you as to how The Tarumi Violinists can assist in any way. I can
be reached at the numbers listed on the cover page or by mail at:

ABOUT THE TARUMI VIOLINISTS
January 1996
The TARUMI VIOLIN PROGRAM, founded in 1986, is composed of talented
youngsters ranging in age from four to sixteen from the New York/Metropolitan area. Under the
dynamic leadership of YUKAKO TARUMI, these motivated young musicians are spreading a
message of love and world peace through their music. They have gained public recognition
through encore performances for Manhattan Cable Television, Cable Television of Great Neck,
Dance Theater of Harlem and as featured performers with the Riverside Orchestra,
Queensborough Orchestra and the North Shore Symphony .
The TARUMI VIOLINISTS. a culturally diverse group, have had the rare distinction of
performing for the United Nations General Assembly, the Dag Hammarskojld Auditorium, the
White House President's Park Music Program, Governor Christine Todd Whitman's Pre-
Inaugural Benefit, the Lyon's Club Party for Disabled Children, and for the White House
Christmas Celebration for over 2000 invited guests. Most recently, they performed to standing
ovations at the John F. Kennedy Center For the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. The Tarumi
Violinists have performed for mayors, governors, foreign leaders, and international diplomats but
their greatest pleasure comes from performing for those less fortunate.
The TARUMI VIOLINISTS have toured Japan on "INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP
TOURS" for four summers performing for UNICEF, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony,
the Nursing Home for The Survivors of the Atomic Bomb and most recently for the orphans and
homeless of the Kobe earthquake. This dedicated group has performed to benefit the homeless,
the New Jersey Children's Hospital and even made a video to be mailed to the Persian Gulf as a
moral booster for our troops during the Persian Gulf Crisis and, more recently, another for troops
in Bosnia. Their diverse musical repertoire spans all musical tastes from Bach and Mozart to
down home country.
In February of 1996, the Tarumi Violinists, as part of The Tarumi Violin Children's
Foundation for the Arts, will perform in northern Spain. They will be guests of the Spanish
Government and the University of Santiago de Compostela, as the University celebrates its 500
year anniversary. This remarkable group will then depart for the Vatican to perform at an
audience with Pope John Paul II. While in Rome, these talented youngsters will perform for the
Vatican Radio Station and the Academy Philharmonic of Rome.
The enthusiasm and focus of this group is a direct result of the energy and dedication its
leader. YUKAKO TARUMI, brings to her students. Yukako Tarumi has studied under the world
renowned Josef Gingold. Ms. Tarumi imparts to her students not only a passion for music but a
genuine caring for their development as musicians and human beings. Her students, in turn, have
chosen to use their musical talents to bring joy to others through their music.
THE TARUMI VIOLINISTS have rightfully been labeled by the media as" MUSICAL
AMBASSADORS OF PEACE."

Dear Social Office at the White House:
My name is Carolyn Chiang and I am a fourteen year old
from Greencastle, Indiana. At the request of Mrs. Maureen
Carkeek, whom you have spoken to on the phone the other day,
I am submitting for a White House Music Performance Audition
the enclosed video tape, audio tape, a recent recital
program, and my biographical information.
The video tape features excerpts from my Sixth Annual
Solo Piano Recital given on October 29, 1995 at DePauw
University in Greencastle. Please refer to the enclosed
program for my repertoire for that recital. The audio tape
contains my debut with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra
on May 3, 1992, when I was ten. I played Bach's Concerto #5
in f minor after winning the Young Musicians' Contest
sponsored by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra earlier
that year. I have also enclosed a copy of the program from
that concert. You will notice from the enclosed material
that I was also featured in the "Yuletide Celebration," an
annual Christmas extravaganza produced and presented by the
Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in both 1994 and 1995. The
"Yuletide Celebration" runs through the month of December
with 27 performances.
I am very excited that the White House is holding this
audition. I had suggested in 1993 to President and Mrs.
Clinton that the White House hold Children's Concerts. I
made that suggestion in a letter, with a video tape
featuring excerpts of my performance, to be forwarded to
President and Mrs. Clinton by Mr. Vernon Jordan when he came
to deliver a Commencement speech at DePauw University that
year. I hope this idea will become a reality!
Thank you very much and I am looking forward to hearing
from you soon.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Chiang

Dear Ms Stock:
This letter follows my conversation with your office personnel on
the morning of March 11, 1996. I was instructed to send background
materials, tapes, and the name of a contact person regarding The
Brotherhood Gospel Singers of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. They are an
a cappella group of nine local men who were reared here in our little town
near Charleston.
For almost nineteen years now, The Brotherhood have been blessing
us with the gift of their glorious talent. In their remarkable tours of
Switzerland and Italy in 1994, the audiences were SO taken with their
message in song that many followed them from town to town. The concert
tape from Nave, Italy is enclosed. All of us here feel that they truly are a
national treasure to be shared widely.
Learning that President Clinton particularly enjoys Gospel music, the
singers have asked me several times if it were posssible to perform for
him. For this reason we are forwarding copies of their tapes, as well as
their history, for your consideration. If a VCR tape is required, please let
me know so that this might be done.
It might be of some interest to your staff to learn that the son of one
of the singers served as a member of the White House Honor Guard during
1992-1993. He is Airman 3 Josie Jenkins III, son of Josie Jenkins, Jr. and
Martha Jenkins.

March 22, 1996
The Brotherhood will present three concerts during the Summer Games
in Atlanta in July, as part of the Cultural Olympiads. They will also
perform during the Spoleto Arts Festival in Charleston during May-June
1996. On March 11th they were featured on CBS's program "This Morning",
illustrating a segment entitled "The Best in Children's Television in
America" as part of the Gullah, Gullah Island series of programs.
It is with great pride that I forward this material to your office to
consider for a possible concert by The Brotherhood of Mount Pleasant,
South Carolina.
