I want to thank Jim Joseph for inviting me to be a\npart of this important meeting. I am sorry I can't join you in\nperson. I remember participating in the Council on Foundations'\nannual meeting in Chicago a few years ago (April 1991) and what a\nwonderful experience that was.\nThe theme of your meeting is \"Leadership for Changing\nTimes.\" Most of you are no strangers to change. You have been\nin the forefront of bringing about much needed change in your\ncommunities. With the support for schools, cultural\ninstitutions, housing, hospitals and a host of other crucial\norganizations that you provide, you are leaders in shaping the\nAmerican ideal of community life.\nThis meeting is important because it marks the first time\nthat you will have visited Capitol Hill in a major, concerted\neffort to inform your legislators about the work that you do and\nthe issues you care about. In the midst of an era of national\nchange, it is critical that we do not try to fix that which isn't\nbroken.\nCommunity foundations are not only working well, they hold\ntremendous potential for the future. The models for\npublic/private partnerships that some community foundations have\nalready developed with the federal and local governments reflect\nthe innovative ways that philanthropy can bring about change.\nEveryone needs to be aware that, by focusing private resources to\nmeet public needs, community foundations embody much of what is\nbest about American life.\nI know the President joins me in saluting the community\nfoundations at work in more than 400 cities, towns and rural\nareas across the country to improve education, rebuild\nneighborhoods and strengthen social services. I hope that you\nwill return home from this meeting with fresh enthusiasm for the\nwork ahead. Together we face the responsibility to make our\ncommunities the kinds of places we want for our families, our\nchildren and for their children. I want to thank each and every\none of you for all that you do to build a better future for our\ncommunities and our nation.\n###"
