HOTOCOPY ESERVATION Humanities + stud 6661 MELANNE VERVEER Katy - there and me ) ms awardees men desiner requests ] MS MUSEUM SERVICES July 30, 1999 Ms. Melanne Verveer Assistant to the President and INSTITUTE Chief of Staff to the First Lady of MUSEUM The White House and LIBRARY Washington, DC 20500 SERVICES Dear Ms. Verveer: This past May the Members of the National Museum Services Board met in Kansas City to discuss the 1999 nominees for the National Award for Museum Service. The Board takes an active role in the selection of the recipients and they agree that reading the nominations is a highlight of their public service. This year's slate of nominees demonstrates the remarkable energy and creativity of museums across the country. Their nominations capture the tremendous spirit of museums that are central to the life of their communities. This award has strong ties to the Clinton Administration. It originated 6 years ago when Diane Frankel became head of the Institute. It is one of the most exciting examples of the power of public/private partnership. Nominations are received from museums all over the country. For museums across the nation this award embodies the highest standard of achievement. I recently learned that the National Medal of Arts and the National Humanities Medal will be presented on September 29. As in the past, the Institute of Museum and Library Services would like to schedule the National Award for Museum Service ceremony for about one half hour sometime that day, either before or after the presentation of the medals. I hope that the First Lady's schedule will allow her to present the museum award and make brief remarks. It is so meaningful for these outstanding museums to be a part of the White House's celebration of the arts and humanities. This is the only national award for museums; it recognizes institutions with programs A Federal agency and exhibitions that make a real difference in their communities. Her serving the public by strengthening museums & libraries Washington, D.C. Ms. Melanne Verveer Page 2 July 30, 1999 involvement in this award has been a tremendous honor to past recipients and to the agency. As you may know, this award does not carry a financial prize, the benefit for recipients stems from the prestige of traveling to Washington to receive this national award. It is the First Lady's participation that provides the momentum. Each of the recipients leverages this momentum in a community celebration back home in the museum. It is inspiring to me how this award is used to tell wonderful stories that are a part of each of these outstanding museums. If you have any questions, please contact me at (202) 606-4649. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide in this matter.
