Dear Hillary,
Many thanks for making time for a meeting when I was in
Washington earlier this month. I know these are stressful
times, and admire your ability to manage so well.
I was glad to compare notes on areas of mutual interest, from
early childhood education, the focus on livable communities,
and the needs for global civil society, to addressing basic
issues such as inequality and the rights of young women. I
look forward to focusing on aspects of each of these issues
once I leave the Foundation, and particularly, to seeing how
some of us who are working on the same issues in different
states can collaborate. David Lawrence, who will concentrate
on issues of early childhood education, is currently in
Paris, but I hope to talk with him before too long to see how
we might conspire. I will let you know what comes out of the
conversation.
I wanted to alert you to the fact that Mary Kaldor, who is
the founder of several major civil society movements and
organizations, and who has just moved from the University of
Sussex to the London School of Economics, will be in
Washington in February. I spoke with her a few days ago, and
she was planning to call Melanne to see if she might meet
with you or Melanne while she is here. The Helsinki
Citizens' Assembly, which Mary started, is one of the major
forces for civil society in Bosnia and other parts of Eastern
Europe and the former Soviet Union, but Mary's work has been

worldwide. She is one of the few activists who has managed
to maintain her academic credibility too. Your schedule is
crazy, I know, but if her visit coincides with some free
time, you would enjoy speaking with her.
Again, thanks for taking time on a difficult day to meet with
me. It was good to catch up. I did want to say that I am
sorry that I have not been able to accept more of the
gracious invitations I have received to attend events at the
White House. I have not wanted to come to events around
issues that are not likely prospects for MacArthur funding.
Often, for those issues that overlap with our interests, the
events have been held on days when there were conflicts.
I appreciate the continued graciousness on the part of the
staff for including me on your invitation list.
Sincerely,
adele,
Adele Simmons
