THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
5 October 1995
MEMORANDUM TO THE PRESIDENT
CC:
LEON PANETTA
FROM:
HAROLD ICKES HI
RE:
PHONE CALL WITH GERALD MCENTEE
At about 6:30pm on Wednesday 4 October I spoke with Gerald
McEntee, who had called me and who informed me that he had also
called you. He would like to talk with you to strongly urge you
not to compromise or make a deal with the Republicans regarding
Medicare/Medicaid. He said that this is the defining issue and
that his union and others are putting a great deal of money into
paid media in a number of states. Their reading of both public
and private polls show that this is cutting hard against the
Republicans and he is concerned about statements attributed to
White House and other Administration officials that it may be the
time to start negotiating with the Republicans. In the strongest
terms possible, he urged that you stay course on this and not
negotiate with the Republicans on this issue.
