cupata ground atyaship - THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON May 14, 1996 MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT THE VICE PRESIDENT FROM: LAURA TYSON ALEXIS HERMAN GENE SPERLING KATE CARR SUBJECT: Update on Planning for Corporate Citizenship Conference This memo briefly outlines the current plans for the White House Corporate Citizenship Conference you are scheduled to host along with the Vice President on Thursday. A memo on Section 127 is being forwarded to you separate from these background materials. A complete briefing notebook including a "discussion guide" for the panels will be sent to you Wednesday evening. You should know that media interest in the conference thus far has been quite high and coverage to date has been extremely positive. As you may have seen, Time magazine, Business Week, and the USA Today have run positive stories on the conference this week. [See Attachment 1 for copies of these articles] I. OVERVIEW. Thursday's Corporate Citizenship Conference is a key component in your effort to shape the debate on the relationship between companies and their workers. This conference builds upon your State of the Union Challenge for employers and employees to join together in putting long term prosperity in front of short term gain and upon your Xavier University speech, where you outlined five Corporate Citizenship challenges. While some have called for a regulatory approach to addressing widespread worker anxiety and others have focused on "corporate killers," you forged a more positive path, outlining criteria that could define a good corporate citizen. In your speech to Xavier University on March 23 of this year, you called for this conference so you could convene business leaders whose companies meet one of the following five corporate citizenship challenges: 1. FAMILY-FRIENDLY WORKPLACES: Creating workplaces that allow workers to be both productive workers and caring and responsible family members. 2. HEALTH AND RETIREMENT SECURITY: Providing the security that a living wage. health care, and pension benefits can give.
