MEMORANDUM FOR LEON PANETTA
From:
Joan N. Baggett JNB
Subject:
Lee Fisher Fundraiser Requests
I wanted to follow up on the attached memo from Mack suggesting we work in a Presidential
trip to Ohio in the next few weeks for an event for Attorney General Lee Fisher. As
indicated in his letter to the President, Fisher has requested that the President come to Ohio in
September or early October. However, we currently have the Vice President confirmed to do
an event for Fisher in Columbus on the evening of Friday, October 14 and, after taking a hard
look at the President's block schedule for September and October, it seems that we really
could not get him out to Ohio to do an event for Fisher any earlier than the weekend we
already have the Vice President scheduled.
Since Fisher has also requested the First Lady to attend an event for him in Ohio, we believe
we could have her fulfill that request and thus adequately cover our commitment to the
Attorney General by having both the First Lady and the Vice President do fundraiser events
for him in Ohio. We are also looking at sending the President to Ohio on Monday, October
24 to fulfill his commitment to Congressman Tom Sawyer -- at which time he could
campaign for Fisher as well. If the President feels very strongly that he personally has to do
a fundraiser, we would advocate him doing a luncheon fundraiser in Cleveland as he goes to
Akron for Sawyer to do an afternoon town hall and evening reception. Please let me know
your thoughts on this.
