George I. Sanchez Charter High School in Houston has been
selected to receive the 1996 Schools of Excellence award
sponsored by Ryder Truck and Hispanic Magazine.
Sanchez, one of 20 charter schools statewide, is sponsored by
the Association for the Advancement of Mexican-Americans.
Founded in 1973, Sanchez serves about 400 at-risk youngsters
who have dropped out of the public school system.
The award is given every year to five U.S. schools that
provide academic and enrichment programs targeting Hispanic
students.
