Diné College "Just in Time Learning" and Technology Access Centers Project
(Tsaile, Arizona and throughout Navajo Nation)
The Navajo Nation, though a partnership that includes Diné College, recently
won a highly competitive Youth Opportunity grant from the U.S. Department
of Labor. With leadership from Diné College, the tribe will use the $10.1
million/year grant to build and operate eight "technology access centers" -
wherever the college has a site - that will weave a "high tech" blanket across the
vast Navajo Nation.
Through the centers, Navajo people of all ages will come together to "cyber talk"
across hundreds of miles of red rocks and blue sky. They will take college-level
courses, called "Just in Time Learning," from distant sites on the Navajo
reservation and throughout the country and the world. Most important, they will
learn to use the high tech tools that will build an economy of self-sufficiency and
success in the 21st century.
To ensure the program's success and build an information technology workforce,
the Navajo Nation and Diné College are partnering with:
Sun Microsystems (infrastructure and workforce)
Oracle (infrastructure and workforce)
Gates Foundation and Microsoft (LAN at every Chapter House).
Discussions are also ongoing with Cisco Systems to develop a "Cisco Training
Academy," and the tribe will establish the "Diné Youth Corps," whose young
members will ensure that this high tech initiative reaches every part of the
community.
To lay the foundation for the Youth Opportunity Grant initiative, the National
Science Foundation awarded Diné College a $-- million IT grant last year, the
first of -- years. The goals of the grant are to partner with the private sector and
other public entities to bring technology to the Navajo Nation and to create
distance learning facilities and programs that can serve as a model for all of
Indian Country.
