Department of the Interior Tribal Demonstration Projects for Montana South Dakota and North Dakota 1. Y2K Computers The Bureau of Indian Affairs has received authorization from OMB to provide $12,327,000 in funds to American Indian and Alaska Native governments for Y2K remediation. These funds will be used to purchase and remediate tribal computers used to implement self-governance and self determination contracts. BIA will schedule a meeting in South Dakota in August 1999 to provide technical assistance and computer equipment to tribes in Montana, South Dakota and North Dakota who need Y2K compliance assistance for their self-determination programs. We have identified 262 non-compliant tribal computers in Montana, South Dakota and North Dakota. The goal of the workshop will be provide technical assistance to remedy Y2K problems and to provide replacement computers. Replacement computers will be PENTIUM IIIs with Windows 98, Office 97, remote terminal emulation and anti virus software. The total value of the technical assistance and equipment for the Plains tribes is approximately $534,000. For the Oglala tribe at Pine Ridge, the BIA will be able to accelerate delivery of a portion of their PENTIUM IIIs by July 6, 1999. 2. Visitor Center The White River Visitor Center operated by the Oglala Nation on the South Unit of Badlands National Park needs replacing. It is currently housed in a trailer. A new Visitor and Cultural Center and the paving of its connecting roads would link the Center to major tourism corridors like Mount Rushmore and Wind Cave National Park. The Park Service supports FY 2000 design and FY 2001 construction funding to build a new Visitors Center. The cost of the facility would be approximately $12.5 million and would be completed in FY 2002. BIA Route 2, the road leading to the proposed Visitors Center is a gravel road in dire need of paving. Regraveling is programmed for FY 2002. Actual paving the 28 miles could cost around $3 million. The BIA will work with the Department of Defense, Department of Transportation and the state of South Dakota to obtain this funding.
