The day was perfect, blue sky, American flag rustling softly above the White House. Your comments, the President's and, of course, those of your young charges, captured the moment perfectly. There were things you could not see. Former VISTA workers in the audience with a tear in the corner of their eye; people who had been inspired by the Kennedys to varied and individual forms of national service rekindling the dreams that first took hold of them. It was a glorious moment for the President and for the country. It is a great tribute to you. Congratulations. I hope you enjoyed participating in the seminar; you certainly contributed to its success. Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Eli: Thank you for your very thoughtful letter of May 24 regarding my testimony before the Education and Labor Committee on the President's National Service Bill. I am absolutely convinced that what you and the President are trying to achieve is just what this country needs. We have so many young people who want to be of service and you are giving them a very meaningful way to be of service. In the process you are also encouraging and enabling them to continue their education. Hopefully, you will find solid support within the Democratic party and a good number of Republicans who are willing to put party politics aside and move forward on this issue. Please know I am going to do everything I can to see that this happens. Dear Eli, Thank you so much for trekking up to Baltimore to attend our Kick-off event. You were terrific. It's important to connect the service of the young with the sacrifices made by their parents and grandparents. A sense of history helps us see we can take from our past and what we must create anew. I really appreciate your ability to have found funds for our summer program. We have a wonderful group of young people--smart, dedicated and willing to work hard. They are full of enthusiasm and ideas. A case in point: one of our Summer Corps participants who last summer worked for Dan Quayle at the Republican National Convention has now switched his registration to Democrat. It is really impressive to see what progress has been made on the service bill. I know that you haven't been able to take a vacation. For those of us who need your persistent advocacy to make this national service actually come to pass, Thank you. As I mentioned to you when we talked in New Mexico earlier this year, your tireless and probably sometimes thankless efforts will prove to be the most important work on behalf of our children than almost any other thing this administration will do. Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. President: My son, Daniel, is back at college in Cambridge this week, and I'm feeling the distance between us. Two hundred miles and twenty years -- of difference in the way we see politics and government. At nineteen, he's the skeptic. But after a six week summer stint at the White House working for Eli Segal, Daniel returned almost enthusiastic about the power of politics and the perfectibility of government. I think proximity created the change. It's true that government is so big and complex now that you can see the whole scheme only by stepping way back. But, still, you can come to love politics only by wading in up to your hips. Daniel is one of the fortunate few who go beyond the mass media barrier to actually meet competent public servants. See them tackle a tough problem and achieve workable compromise. And come to know government realistically as something better than the public trough and something less than the perfect solution. As President, you have the best chance to change young people's ideas about government -- by speaking about and to the issue and by including opportunities like Daniel's as integral parts of other programs. Promoting, for example, high school internships and government summer camp in addition to public service for college tuition. Because no televised town meeting can substitute for one first-hand experience of honest politics. Or two weeks in the boiler room. If we did this, we might turn most of our young skeptics into old idealists like ourselves. Like most things that matter, government gets better when you're close. Memorial were considering how to commemorate the 25th anniversary of my father's Presidential campaign, we knew we wanted to do something that would reflect the man: his compassion for the disadvantaged, his courage to grow and learn, his raw and disturbing honesty, his realist's knowledge of how to transform policy into action, his appeal to the best instincts in America, his efforts--in the words of Aeschylus-- "To tame the savageness of man, and make gentle the life of the world". Your participation helped to make this possible. The 25th anniversary program in Los Angeles captured the very essence of the message we hoped to send, and I want to thank you. Your keynote address was particularly compelling and a perfect introduction to a day that brought back fond memories for many, and that moved and inspired many others toward building a better future. We accomplished our goal. As part of the 25th anniversary we are planning to produce a book, titled "A Vision for America", from papers collected from the conferences throughout the country. I would very much like to include an entry from you. If you are interested we will need a five to ten-page paper sent to our Washington office by June 15th. I was proud to watch C-SPAN into the late hours last night, as you led the celebration at the White House. Your words, and particularly the President's, reached a business person in Boston last night, and made me acknowledge that while the private sector does have a leadership role in making service happen, it is the role of government to establish the principles that govern our nation. A partnership of service providers (CityYear), private enterprises (Timberland) and an enlightened, decentralized, accountable government (Americorp) just might work For so long, government has seemed to me a morally bankrupt institution. At least in the case of national service, a few men and women of principle have forced me to rethink that point of view. In particular, I was moved by your remarks just before you signed the legislation. Without notes, you spoke straight at me, and your words were powerful. At Timberland, we have worked hard to support national service. We are the leading corporate investor in Boston's (and now the nation's) CityYear program; we have partnered with CityYear in a multitude of ways, from corporate volunteerism to organized community service here in New Hampshire. I was a national co-chair for Americans for National Service; I testified before the Senate, and lobbied with our Senators and Representatives for the passage of the act. I did those "political" things, but reluctantly, because I was not ready to believe that government could do anything "right." I believed (and still worry) that with the Federal government's entry into service would come inefficiency, bureaucracy, inertia. Knowing CityYear viscerally, and depending upon it to help create a better world for my children to grow up into, I worried. The Timberland Company 11 MERRILL INDUSTRIAL DRIVE P.O. Actually, I have been planning to write to you for awhile; but first, I had to take exams, and then I had to start the new semester, and then Anyway, I am finally writing; so, I no longer need to make excuses. I wanted to write to congratulate you and to thank you. I am so excited about your new job. It gives me tremendous confidence in the new administration and in the future knowing that someone as caring and as generous as you is finally running things in Washington. I am sure that some days are so exhausting and frustrating that it seems like Bits and Pieces was a pretty good deal, but I cannot think of anyone whom I would prefer to be in your new position. I think there is no more important project than encouraging and facilitating volunteer service, given the scope of our nation's problems, the extent of people's poverty and the hopelessness that so many people feel. It is very exciting for me to be graduating in this election year. Although I may not be a Clinton supporter down the line, ! cannot help but be infected by the exuberance and enthusiasm that so many people feel about his election. I believe that this enthusiasm and the excitement generated by the changes in Washington are encouraging many smart and talented young people to look to government as a means to do good, rather than as a bunch of rich, old white men who spend a lot of money for very few results. I think that it is precisely this kind of excitement and optimism that ideally will be stimulated by a new national service corps and a renewed ethic of voluntarism. So, I am congratulating and thanking you for committing to such a difficult but important task. I also want to thank you for arranging tickets for me for the innaugural. I know that everyone was asking you for something, but I was so pleased to be in Washington for all the festivities. As you may know, the innauguration was in the middle of my final exams, so it was a welcome break from studying as well as an exciting and memorable couple of days. I hope to see you soon; although, I know that you are unlikely to have a break in the near future.
