INDEPENDENT SECTOR is a nonprofit coalition of over
800 corporate, foundation and voluntary organization
Members with national interest and impact in
philanthropy and voluntary action. The organization's
mission is to create a national forum capable of
encouraging the giving, volunteering and not-for-profit
initiative that help all of us better serve people,
communities and causes.
The goals, objectives and activities central to the pursuit
of INDEPENDENT SECTOR's mission are concentrated
in six program goal areas:
PUBLIC INFORMATION AND EDUCATION, to achieve
increased public awareness of this sector and of giving
and volunteering, while promoting active citizenship
and community service;
GOVERNMENT RELATIONS, to develop and maintain
effective relationships with government, and to
coordinate the multitude of interconnections between
the nonprofit sector and the various levels of
government;
RESEARCH, to develop an identifiable and growing
research effort that produces the body of knowledge
necessary to accurately define, chart and understand
the sector and the ways it can be of greatest service to
society;
GIVE FIVE, to increase support for the public services of
voluntary organizations by helping Americans
understand and move toward the national standard of
giving five-five percent of income and five hours per
week to the causes of their choice;
LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT, including Values
and Ethics, to enhance the capacity of the not-for-profit
sector to achieve excellence in leadership and
management of philanthropic and voluntary
organizations;
THE MEETING GROUND, to create and maintain a
significant sense of community among the organizations
of the sector, to provide a "meeting ground" for
cooperation and learning.
