KATE FRUSHER VIA FAX Fri-mxs u/ 415 723-7697 fox Stanford University Graduate School of Business Rivlen Public Management Program Stanford, CA 94305 Riulin 10 March 10, 1993 Ms. Kate Frucher National Service Trust Fund The White House Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Ms. Frucher: Thank you for agreeing to arrange for US a meeting with Mr. Segal during the week of March 22-27. The group with whom Mr. Segal will be speaking will consist of 25 first and second year MBA students, four J.D. students, and three Stanford faculty members. Most of the MBA students in the group are participants in the Stanford Graduate School of Business' Public Management Program (PMP). The PMP has both an official academic component and a student-run extracurricular component. Each year, PMP participants pour their energies and creativity into a Public Management Initiative (PMI), consisting of a series of lectures, workshops, and projects that directly impact our community. The theme for next year's PMI will be Urban Development. The PMP prepares Stanford GSB graduates with the necessary skills for leadership in public service positions. The MBA students fall into three segments: 1. Those who intend to work in the public sector after graduation. 2. Those who intend to work in private corporations but are interested in supporting and developing public service initiatives from this vantage point. 3. International students with interests in United States public policy. We envision a 1-2 hour meeting that begins, after introductions, with remarks from Mr. Segal regarding the activities of the White House Office for National Service. He may speak for as long as he wishes, or only briefly. We would like to leave ample room for an informal question, answer and discussion period following Mr. Segal's remarks, as we anticipate a great amount of interest and input from the group itself. A list of topics that would be of interest, as well as questions that Mr. Segal may anticipate, follows: 1. An overview of the Clinton Administration's national From: # 03-10-93 05:49 pm To: #9,12024566428 003 of 003 service corps program. (Participants will have read briefing materials gathered from press. Nonetheless it may be useful to provide an overview and bring the group "up to date" on the status of the program.) 2. How will the program mesh with the Administration's other domestic policy initiatives (e.g. education, training, environmental cleanup, economic development, etc.). 3. How will the program be managed/implemented? 4. What will be the content and location for jobs in the pilot program? For the broader program? 5. What should/will be the role of businesses and corporations in both the implementation of the program and the development of a public service ethic in the United States? 6. What role(s), if any, does Mr. Segal envision for public- service minded business school graduates both within the program itself, and as liasons to the program from within the business community? 7. What is Mr. Segal's personal vision for public service in the United States? Information regarding Mr. Segal's background would be very useful for our briefing book. If possible, could you fax a short biographical sketch or other information to me at (415) 723- 7967? I realize that we've not yet managed to speak on the phone to arrange a time and place for the meeting. May I start by suggesting Monday March 22 (other than 11:00am-12:00pm) or Tuesday March 23 (early morning or late afternoon)? Again, thank you. I look forward to speaking with you.
